Since my husband's lungs have been damaged, our PCP recommended that we get an air purifier to preserve what's left and protect him from any irritants in the air. He recommended the following: http://www.airpurifiers.com/products/iqair
This looks to be about $700 purchase maybe more if we get one for the bedroom too. Is anyone knowledgeable about this?

i got an oreck one quite a few years ago. i love it and need it. my problems started when forced to work in buildings with bad air for 5 years.
it is older than the ones they sell now-but similar. i think they are more like 300. it is easy to clean-works really good...i get sick whe i don't use it. good luck.

My aire treatment machine is an Air Source by Shaklee. It's not a filter system.
It ionizes the air so that the particles floating around that can get inhaled fall out of the air. It also can kill viurses and bacteria through the process.
Similar products on much larger scale are used in Asian airports since the bird flu scare.
The cost is high, around 700, but you get a smaller one as well, which can work in one room pretty well. We use it when we travel and it makes hotel air much more tolerable.
My mom with horrible asthma is using one as well and has not had asthma once in two years...she used to be hospitalized every spring. Not one hospital visit since the Air Source.

I'm very interested in this thread, as a purifier sounds like such a good idea, yet there's been so much talk about them actually making the air *worse* for you? Are there any actual filters that are considered safe?

True HEPA filtration is supposedly the best method for filtering the air. Hospitals use HEPA systems.
Clean rooms, like here in Silicon Valley, use HEPA as well as Ionization and one other process that I don't remember.
The trick to HEPA filtration as I understand it is to change the filters frequently. They can be costly.
I am an idiot when it comes to remembering to change filters, so the Shaklee system works best for me. I only have to remember to buy a new light source module once a year and I'm fine. It's not as costly as the filters for the year.
Clearly I'm a fan of the Air Source. It really has made a difference in my and my mother's households. But I also realize that the cost isn't what many are able to pay, so will also support other commercially available products that are good.
My allergist said that HEPA is the best that you can purchase over the counter, as well as having a vacuum cleaner that has a good filtration system with it. He prefers the Air Source as well.
Good luck to you either way. Any good air filter product is certainly better than none!!!
