Hi All,

I just found out about the offramp to the Bay Bridge collapsing early this morning. This is going to seriously affect how I get to my doctor's appointment and just wanted to let everyone know about it who may be driving in to San Francisco for their appointment.

Traffic is going to be a nightmare, since the collapse happened on the Oakland side of the bridge, affecting highways 580, 980, 24, and I believe 880.

One option is taking BART. Although since I am coming from the north bay I may take highway 37 to 101 (paying the humongous Golden Gate Bridge toll...grrr).

Anyway, just be aware and plan for extra time and alternate routes or public transportatino if need be.

Hi Texas,

A tanker crashed into a pylon and burst into flames, melting the steel supports and causing the collapse.

He did suffer second degree burns but is otherwise alright and thankfully, nobody else was hurt!

My dear lyme friend, minimonkey, lives right off the exit shown in the picture above - 7th street/West Grand Ave. We normally get together before our appointment to hang out but now I have no way of getting to her place by car. Wah! [cussing]

The Bay Area traffic is going to be messed up for months. Glad I do not have to go see my doctor until the end of June and sorry for anyone that has to be in that traffic. I am hiding out as much as possible in the rural area of the Bay Area - no traffic out here - just tourists looking for nature which unfortunately can come with ticks.

Anyone know how far ticks can crawl on beach sand? Is it safe to lie on the beach? We will stick to the subject of just ticks here and not landsharks.

I'm just flabbergasted that this happened in the middle of the night and no one was SERIOUSLY hurt. I take that same exact curve (as the one where the trucker flipped the tanker) all the time in my big van and have thought many times about how you could lose control there- it sorta sneaks up on you after a faster straightaway.

This is totally the stuff of my worst freeway-driving nightmares- and it happened when no one was around. Amazing.

I live kinda near there too- surface streets aren't too bad, but of course it's still the weekend and we haven't seen Monday Morning (or Monday 5:30 PM) yet.

Re Vanilla's question about ticks on beaches, I heard from someone with Lyme that they are wondering if they got their Lyme from sand fleas on the beach.

I bet sand fleas could carry it - why not?

I was bitten badly by sand flies while camping on the beach on a tiny tropical island once years ago when I was young and foolish. This went on for 3 days...
