It's head in sand syndrome. As you know, in Florida, there's lots of sand.
In the mid-90s, UF vet school conducted studies on spirochetes in ticks in the Southeast. All the tick-borne diseases showed up.
There's no reason to think that NOT ONE PERSON has ever gotten into the disease chain. Ticks are terrible here.
They will go so far as to agree that the ticks are infected, but won't give in to the truth that ticks bite deer, they bite mice, they bite dogs, they bite people.
It should be a no-brainer.

LOL LOL LOL All my family got bitten 6 years a go at a State Park north of Gainesville....and we got lyme and co-infections......
It is absurd to think a person would wear long sleeves and pants in such a hot and humid weather!!!!

Ticks are 10 times worse than alligators.
If you cannot avoid bites from either ticks or alligators, choose alligators.

I was at the vet's office a couple of days ago.
There was this huge poster on the wall with all of the tick types
And the regions they are found in....
Guess what?
All of them are found in the southeast including Louisiana and Florida.
Go figure.
Suprising that the vets in this area know it, but the ducks don't....
What an idiot.

Yes, this one really got me going when I read it yesterday morning...not a good way to start the day.
Tincup, I felt the same way...explosive! Took me most of the day, but I managed to write a letter to the editor and with lots of editing and keep it to 300 words, so that maybe it will make the paper.
I'm glad you sent them a good rant. I opted for extrememly diplomatic. I have yet to ever see any real discussion of Lyme in this area. After so many years of being focused on the immediate concerns of having a child with LD, I am thinking that I might be finally getting the energy to tackle some advocacy issues here in Gainesville...thought I'd start out slow and measured.
Dr. Wesson's other comment from the article:
"you still need to be sure that you don't leave the mouthparts below your skin when you extract the tick. Use wax or soap, mineral oil or petroleum jelly to suffocate the tick before removing it."
...the really sad part is that Dr.W is teaching the residency docs at Shands.....god help us!
Nebula, yes, that study was done by Dr. Butler, whom I have spoken to a few times and mentioned in my letter.
Lymeblue, sorry to hear about your family! Was that Oleno State Park? Have heard of many infected there.
Just spoke to a neighbor today who recently met two more Gainesvillians who got Lyme here...naturally, they had to go out of town for tx.

Not only do we have endemic lyme at Florida, I went from a completely healthy junior at the University of Florida to a bed riddenly ill senior at UF after contracting lyme in Gainesville!
I went undiagnosed for 4.5 years in Gainesville and at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville before an extremely caring mental health professional (at the UF infirmary of all places!) believed I was sick, mentioned lyme, and referred me to a renowned infectious disease specialist in Tampa.
Yes, like many of you, I was referred to mental health in the absence of various positive medical tests.
My llmd in Tampa has saved my life, but I still live with many of the late stage symptoms today as a result of the ignorance in Gainesville and Mayo clinic in Jax.

Yep, Oleno State Park. That Park was full of ticks....literally everywhere.....I got bitten May 2000......I called a couple of months after learning my dx, and they told me there is not even one case reported......go figure!!!

Last year I did a private survey in Florida and I had a list of over 2,000 people who had been diagnosed within the last four years with Lyme in Florida. 80% of them remember being bitten in Florida. So much for no lyme in Florida.

We are on fire down here in Florida.. smoke all over the place. Couldn't go to doctor's appointment yesterday due to smoke. But...
Maybe that will help reduce the tick poplulation?

the teaching school in gainesville,FL also takes the stance that Lyme is not an issue.. they are the ones who withdrew my children off Metformin for diabetes, synthroid for hypo-thyroid (even knowing that not treating thyroid disorders can lead to heart ailments as I recently found out), doxcy for lyme and they had been on it for over 3 years.. even knowing one son had a heart condition since age 6 .. which after ABX treatment was no longer found...
I know I can not post the name of the hospital.. but I gave you the general area..
they try to rationalize this by saying there are a great many reasons why he may have a heart condition.
when I tried to argue with them that their father died at age 42 from not being treated for LD and his DNA was normal on autopsy, yet tests found the bacteria in his blood. I had the autopsy report in my hand, which lists as a causative factor in his death Lyme being 6 out of 10 factors!!!
they had a copy in his files...
.. and they were trying to counter me I stormed out of there and said "My son will not be well coming here for treatment" My youngest son is the one with multiple body functions which has been affected.. btoh have the ADHD tag.. Bi polar tag.. anxity depressive disorder.. and my youngest has disbetes.. hypo thyroid, where my eldest has a history of heart block...
I hate the stubborn mode that these "PROFESSIONALS" choose to take when if it were them having to deal with it .. they would be more open to ideas...
they certainly closed their umbrellas a long time ago...

Hey TC
our house was dark as nighttime at 3 PM today.. we are 30 miles north of a large fire (hit 15,000 acres and only 35% contained) and (30 miles below one from Georgia which has destroyed 35,000 acres and is 0 contained.. ) the fire fighters they are calling in are staying in the holiday inn where my son works..
it is getting scary with ashes falling like snow... adn a yellow haze and I can't breath out side at the doorway.. I hope you are safer than us... besides I did know you were in florida last I heard you lived somewhere else.. heads Up or duck and hide mode is setting in..

We do have our problems here in Florida: unchecked development and urban sprawl, huricanes, alligators, fireants, roaches, ticks, ignorant doctors and fires.
It makes me miss the sub-zero temperatures, blizzards and windstorms I dreaded in Colorado. (I didn't know enough to dread ticks, but that's actually where I got bit. And there is plenty of urban sprawl.)
livinlyme, be safe!!! If only we could get some rain, but it doesn't look to happen today or tomorrow.
That was a terrible experience you had at the teaching hospital. From what I've read, this is no different than what we can expect with Lyme at most university medical centers. Yours is about the worst story of mis-treatment I've heard.
We went there when my son got hit in the eye with a paintball, and the doctor was top-notch. But talk about disorganized! They didn't get one bill straight, I had to call them every month. Their statements had "Gainesville" misspelled on the return address HA! And can you believe having to pay to use the parking garage?
I sure hope your family has better medical care now.

N2005, I am sorry to hear this situation you encountered.. yes paying for parking and no FREE parking anywhere !!! but there is a more horrible story that my real estate agent had with them;
Her 16 year old son was involved in an accident on a friday there was a very small space pf the vehicle left that was not mangled it was the driver side window which was all that remained in form his body was squished in this area and he was taken to gainesville ER and after 5 hours released and told there was nothing wrong with him he went to a specialist GTG we are in fire danger need to get a uhaul
