Hi agian!
I am currently taking Plaquenil & Clarithromycin and a few hours after I take them I get this nasty metalic taste in my mouth. The dr suggested driniking something orange when I take them but it does not work!
Also I have lost a toenail and a half since taking these abx. Anyone else have any issues with that too?
Thanks again,
Trudy

Yep, Biaxin/clarithromycin causes a metallic taste. After a couple months I didn't even notice it anymore, but in the beginning it was bad enough to wake me up at night.

I haven't had any nail issues.

Yes the toenails falling off can be a side affect of longterm abx sometimes but it is usually transient- it usually goes away as strangely as it comes!!! Never heard of it being an ongoing issue- it happened to me my fingernails started lifting off on 2 fingers- then 2 weeks later normal and normal ever since- brought up as topic on sci.med board once- other people had it happen- transient- passes!!!!@

(Yucky thougH!)

Looked back at old messages- nails lifting off bed seems to be a Lyme symptom Herx or a Lyme symptom!!! that is why transient!!!

Abstract

A 23-year-old man experienced dysesthesia of the distal parts of four limbs and spilling of drinking water from the right corner of his mouth. He also experienced low grade fever, headache, and nausea. Neurological examination
showed weakness of the right frontal, orbicularis oculi and orbicularis oris
muscles, atrophy and weakness of the interosseous muscles in both upper limbs
and dysesthesia in the distal parts of four limbs. Lasegue's sign was also positive on the left side. Examination of CSF showed lymphocytic pleocytosis and an increase of total protein. Serum antibody against Borrelia garinii was
positive as determined by ELISA. The patient was diagnosed as a case of Lyme
disease. His symptoms were not alleviated by administration of ceftriaxone (2
g/day) for 15 days, and dermatitis of nail roots appeared. Following
administration of penicillin G at a high dose (12 million units/day) for 20
days, both neurologic symptoms and dermatitis were alleviated. Since B. garinii
was reported to move preferentially toward the sites of low temperature,

dermatitis of nail roots may be one of the characteristic features of Lyme
disease

caused by B. garinii.

Ols sci.med posts-

I am in the process of testing for Lymes by a Dr. that doesn't seem sure of what he's dealing with. My fingers and toes are very inflamed, swollen and painful up to the first joint, with the nails coming off along with most of the typical Lymes symptoms. Has anyone else had this symptom? If so, what can you tell me about it? Also, can you recomment a Dr. within driving distance of Ok?

Subject: Lyme-literate doctor in Southeast

I began having symptoms during early Fall, 2001 after a very bad bout
of "flu."
...pain in my feet was so intense by Christmas that it was sometimes uncomfortable to walk. My fingernails were pulling up off the bed and my hair was falling out. All of the "blood test" for a variety of conditions were coming back negative --- or so I thought.

In January, 2002, my neurologist called to say that a positive Lyme titer had been accidently filed away.
