It has become constant - and loud - and it is driving me crazy. It is also accompanied with a terrible headache, in the back of the neck and I feel slightly nauseous. Has anyone ever experienced the thumping in the ear, and if so, what is it? Thanks in advance

ive had the thumping that felt as if water was in the ear. is that was this feels like? it was like a twitch but deep within the ear and painful.

The thumping is not painful, but very forceful. As a matter of fact, it could sound like water in the ear. It's a good description. Of course, my doctor doesn't have any clue... I have been given cipro and biaxin (to treat Bartonella) - I have been looking at the meds for a month now in my medicine cabinet and haven't had the courage to start taking them. I keep postponing. Tomorrow.

I haven't had thumping in my ear, but feel as if a pencil is being jabbed in my ear,somewhat painful but it seems to last for a few seconds to a few mins.
I had also put off taking my biaxin for 3 weeks, not wanting to feel lously. My wife finally fussed at me long enough so I started it last week.
I have had several instances of "flu x3" But they only lasted 5-6 hours.

what helped with my thumping was benadryl....that is what the dr suggested to me when he couldnt find anything in my ear. I had this at the beginning of my illness this time around in 2005, and in 2000 when i was first bit.

Thank you for the benadryl tip. I will try it. As far as the sharp pencil goes, I also have a sharp intermittent stabbing pain in ear area and in the back of my throat... but, today, the thumping is unbearable. It helps to know that you are not the only one in this predicament. Thanks, guys.

I get ear thimping that coincides with pain in a tooth. Need to get that fixed!
Do you have root canals or the possibility of an absess that could be causing problems?

Is it pulsating? My son has pulsations in his ear in beat with his heart. He has pseudo-tumor cerebri.

Very, very strange. I wasn't sure if this symptom was related to my lyme or not, but if certainly seems now that it is. I've had eustachian tube problems for a few years, but nothing like this. It's a loud thumping, with strong pressure that comes around for a few days and then toatally disappears for a while.
I still don't understand what is causing it.

Thumping in the ear that sounds like fast drums in your ear are your ear drums retracting back and forth. That is usually pressure related which is why benedryl would work for that.
When tooth pain is present with it, just confirms it. Pressure due to your sinuses causes tooth pain and your ear drums to retract. Benedryl will also work for that.
I have had this my whole life. It is a huge pain in the rear!! I have the constant ear ringing too. I can't stand for it to be quite in my house because then I can just hear the ringing and thumping even more.
I've had lyme almost all my life, I could assume that is why I have the ear problems, but I couldn't say that for sure. But Lymies are more sensitive to mold and fungus and your sinuses react to those things and pressure builds up.....you get the picture.

Try magnesium supplements for this.
I had this years ago, after my first bout with lyme and tick bites.
I lived in Europe at the time, and went to a doctor there.
It is essentially your eardrum twitching. Like the little muscles in your face that might twitch due to a number of things, your eardrums can spasm too.
He prescribed magnesium pills, some grey heavy-duty magnesium pills. I took them, and the ear drum twitching went away, and has not returned.
Looking back on this, it was a year after I got the first lyme-inducing tick bite, so that as Marnie always points out, my Mg level must have crashed.
