I am going to post a sign at the coffe shop to get help filing and sorting all my medical junk. I am hoping to get an older high school kid or college kid on break that is off for the summer.
The job wil probably be a total of 40 to 60 hours. I would like to break that into 2 to 3 hour sessions. They would help me with the project. I just cannot do it alone because my brain won't work that well.
I have no idea whay kids are making these days.
What should I offer to pay per hour??

do you NOT have any relative or friend who can help you but 40-60 hrs. is a lot of time!
is this just for you or for SSDI, disability insurance benefits?
if SSDI, they have SPECIFIC ways to organize things!! so best to check 1st with them how they want organized so yours match theirs !! HINT! Mine weren't; they were by drs!! SSDI is by date regardless who the dr. is.
i'm going to give you my opinion as a former secretary.
1. i'd ask for a reference from their high school teacher in business/whatever it's called now adays
they have the ability to: put things in order, good with dates,
To get a good skilled worker i'd pay $10/hr. i believe $6.15 are new federal guidelines, but this is a mind-challenging job.

Thanks for the info Betty but this is just for help for me ............ not for SS.
I am really just looking for a suggestion on what to pay. I cannot handle a project like contacting teachers and finding out about the organizational skills. If I could do that, I could do my own filing.
I have got to keep this simple.

some suggestions if you have the money:
start by sorting by year, then break it down further.
get the colored file folders. you can subdivide by placing the tabs in alernate positions.
label them by labwork, dr's visits, insurance statements, etc., whatever category you thinkyou can remember.
course i'm assuming you have a 2 or 4 drawer filing cabinet.
friends are always amazed when they see how i have all our files organized. my husband is not allowed to touch it. sure makes tax time easy.

I can relate. I have been trying to get the files set up since I came down with this in Oct. 2001.
I have hired people and that did not work out.
I have had people volunteer and that did not work out.
I had no idea that it is a skill most people do not have.
I know it should not be this hard to get help nor should the job be that difficult.
it is on my to do list and I hope to some day get the job done well.
As far as pay, I think that will fall into place once you see how well they are able to do things.
The most difficult job is finding a person that can do the job. Who would have thunk it?
Of course I lived in a very small town at the time out in the middle of no where.
the unemployment office could probably give you a going rate on the task.

If you're looking for a high school student on vacation - are you up to calling the local high school and speaking with the guidance counselor?
Not only could they recommend a good kid for the job & possibly post it in their office, they could likely give you an idea on a good rate to pay a student in your area.
This is a great time to find students looking for summer activities and work.
The other option that has worked well for me, with neighbor's kids, is asking what they have been paid for previous jobs (babysitting, whatever) - they've been reasonable.
Also, I can't remember the guidelines for this, but if you are paying them less than a certain amount (cumulatively within the same year), I think they will not have to file taxes on it, so take that into consideration when you're figuring out the rate. Doublecheck me on this!

I know you are looking for young people...
but what about older people who are retired. Some of them just look for something to do...
and some of them were former secrataries and what not and would actually have expereince organizing paperwork.
It is difficult for me to suggest a price for any age cuz I know what a dollar buys varies from state to state and from what I have heard we are more expensive than you.
I hope you find someone that can help.

robi, Make sure you figure out how to consider it a donation for their time or something.
I run a small museum. All volunteers for staffing. We decided to put an ad in the paper for a few hours of part time help and before long, we were forced to do it legally with having to take things out of the pay for the state and fed. govt. What a mess.
The treasurer was sending checks to numerous places for cents up to a couple of dollars.
Never again... do it under the table..lmt

I don't know if this would work for you or not, but I hired a profesiiinal organizer who helped me get my files set up and organized. That can be done in under three hours time.
Then I could work on things when I was up to it. If that's too much for you to handle, then I would say that around this part of the state, which is really a whole other state, you would need to pay around $10 an hour. They get that for working retail now!
If it were school time I could recommend some good former students who might need the extra cash and are top notch. But they're home by now, or haven't started yet.
Good luck! I have always been pretty organized, even at my worst. My most difficult task is making myself file things immediately, instead of moving them from one pile to another. Now that my files are on the same level of my home as I bring in the mail it's much easier!

Hey Robi, he hee... Cactus gave you some good tips. Sort by year, put into file folders, then get it away from where you can see it every day so it does not cause stress. I think $10/hr is fair. Good idea, about the "donation"

The Pure Country Band, had to sit infront of the IRS, 3 times. Ann, had every thing sorted out in big envlope's. 12 envlope's per year.
Anything the Strick-Nice, Lady wanted to know, Ann would say, "What Year, and What Mounth.
If yr mounth's have to much, break it down into week's. Then put the 4 envlope's into 1 biger one, to keep it simpler.
Start with this mounth, and work backwards, till ya run out of info. Then next mounth, go's in the front of the File-box.
It was soooooooo, cool. Just like on the movie, Aren Brockavich, every question, Ann said, what year, what mounth.....?
If you have to pay, for something that should be a I did it just becouse were friends. Should be some body by you that will do it just for the chance to " PAY-IT-FORWARED "
I sure would. And it's a lot eazer finding a adult, than a younger kid, that would take that much time these day's, unless it pay's alot.
And when thier done, you have no clue if anyone can make sense of what you have in the box.
Every penny in, and every penny out, for the show, and our normal-people's life, The Houseold, was filed,and could find anything by date.
Once it's done, then it's eazy to stay ahead of it. Have a basket, like back in school, to put every thing into, and the 1st of next mounth, empty it into a box, for filing.
Sure wish'ed ya lived here in the Ozark's. You'ed get to meet one of the wacky'est people you'll ever meet, unless yr friend's with Robin William's.......! And I'ed get to sit on yr living room floor, and start with yesterday.
I neaver could of done it either, before I started taking 6 garlic pills a day, and eating a bulb of " RAW-GARLIC " a week, two years ago.

I think you need to pay at least what a teenager would get for babysitting. That is usually a good benchmark. I paid a high school senior $12.00/hour because she was getting $10 for babysitting. She was quite happy to file and organize for me - no changing diapers involved.
Hourly is probably less where you live. I happen to be in the 2nd most expensive part of the country.
