I just can't believe this. Tonight I saw a rash on my son's stomach that resembles an EM. He had this bumpy but not pink rash about 5 days ago and tonight it appeared to be pink and suddenly has a circular appearance. It only bumpy on one side before tonight.

OMG. I pray he doesn't have Lyme as well.

Of course I am calling Doc asap Monday morning but do you guys think this looks like an EM to you?

I swear I have been checking him daily with thorough tick checks and have never found a tick on him (this year anyway).

Help!

Dear Pineapple,

I am not an expert by any means on EM rashes....

However, I wouldn't chance it.

IMHO, I would go to the doctor and get him started on some antibiotics asap.

Sorry this is happening to you and your son.

Sending you calming thoughts and prayers.

Hugs,

Geneal

I called the my LLMD office today and they would not tell me what is the recommended or standard dosage of amoxicillin for the age / kg of my child since he is not officially a patient.

I called a local pediatrician and they would not see him without a referral. I called my GP office and guess what - he is on VACATION for 8-10 days.

Guess who is taking call for my primary?

The DOC who MISDIAGNOSED my EM RASH. "We don't have Lyme, etc etc."

Great. Just great.

I think it is very sad what the LLMD witch hunt has done. Now credible patients with real rashes cannot even be told what a "standard" dosage is for early Lyme treatment.

IDSA says 50mg/kg of amoxicillin. Am I reading this correctly for children?

I can't find in the ILADS guidelines where it refers to dosage for children for early lyme. Can someone find it?

If you can't get help anywhere else, maybe you should take him to a walk-in clinic or the ER and be an obnoxious mother. Insist that they document your Lyme concerns in the file so they know you know there is a paper trail. Ask for photocopies. That should get him some antibiotics.

Pinneapple...

Please let us know if you find anything out!! That rash looks exactly like the one that my son now has on his stomach... [Frown] I just noticed it yesterday morning...

I just had him at the ER a month ago, because he had a tick still attached to him that I could not remove...and now this. Plus he now has a symptoms of a "cold?"....

I am having enough trouble trying to get myself diagnosed and treatment started. I don't even know where to start to take him!! Plus, on top of that, he is allergic to almost all antibiotics...

I pray that your son's rash is not an EM rash...but please let us know...
God Bless
Ellen

It looks like a bite mark!!!

It does not look like any EM rash I have ever seen.

That does not mean it is not one but it does not look like any I have ever seen, and I have seen a few.

I took son to the ped. today. She was very, very nice and listened well. She said the rash looked more like a strep rash. Throat was ok though. His nodes were enlarged but she said consistent with someone who had strep in the past. "Well you didn't see a tick, so....." She did blood work including metabolic profile, sed rate, and Lyme titer. I asked her what Lyme test - she said Elisa. She said the labs will not do a western blot without a positive titer first, CDC rule. I asked her if it would be reliable since it is so early, she agreed that sometimes it may miss some. I told her I heard that it missed 60% of cases, she shrugged shoulders and said, "It might but sometimes people claim they have Lyme and they do not really, they just complain about many symptoms and that skews the testing results and research."

ugh.

She said it "could" be Lyme and it is better to treat early than to miss it because it is inexpensive if treated early.

She prescribed 250mg amoxicillin TID for 10 days. She said that should cover any potential strep or Lyme. My son is 69 lbs. I thought he should have more, but no go.

Ellen,

my son also has symptoms of a "cold". He has had a moist cough for two weeks and chills but no fever. His temp was 96 today!!

Oh, I forgot - she asked him if he had joint pain, as if that shows up right away when they have a rash. Geesh.
