BE VERY VERY CAREFUL WHAT YOU WRITE ON LYMENET.

IF YOU DON'T WANT IT PUBLIC , DON'T WRITE IT.

i had googled another persons display name.
guess what ,there was a whole history on that person.

i looked up mine and almost every post i put up was on there.
so do not use the same name across the internet
change it often.

don't write something if you don't want it read by everybody on th internet, including insurance companies, cdc, idsa

this is not freedom of speech it is invasion of privacy.
i do not know if you can have this removed.

I was pretty shocked to discover the same thing!
Better to use a name that will not convey your real name?

docdave,

I think, but I could be wrong, that if you are signed in here, then do the Google, all the information comes up from Lymenet.

But if you log out, it won't come up. I remember someone talking about this awhile back on another board.

Try it and see. I sure hope that is correct.

That is crazy. I'm gonna log out and see if it does the same thing.

I logged out ... opened up a new browser and did it again. Sure enough every thread I've ever written in came up here and other places I'm belong too. CRAZY

Posted by karatelady (Member # 7854) on :

Oh great!

We tried it on Immune Support and couldn't get the information unless we were logged in.

Um.... I'm not quite sure why anyone should be shocked or upset.....

.......isn't that Goggle's job..... to find all incidents of a particular keyword that appear on any public-access forum or webpage?

Well, looks like Google does a good job. [Smile]

it does not upset me that the info can be searched

it does howver scare me quite a bit , that they can search
stymielymie and come up with every post.

i have nothing to hide.
but there is an incident on lymenet now, where

somebody, being mean, looked up a name on google
and found out very personal information
about that person.

i find this a disgrace, and will be changing my call name on each site.

if a person has lyme, their background should not make a difference as to the treatment they receive on this site.

this person has been treated terribly, not because of lyme, but bercause somebody did a search on they call name and found out info that was not
relevant to this discussion group.

docdave I only found 4 posts on google under stymielymie. using my real name I find I have a rock band...am a soccer player in the UK and may be a race car driver as well.

But I have a common name and none of those people are me. btw I also supposedly live in Utah and new Mexico, not Texas.

I just wouldn't get too exercised over this...I think it searches your own computer first.

I agree Doc Dave - treatment of that person was unfair and the `dirt' they dug up didn't prove anything one way or another......

Unfortunately, though, people do have a right to expect consistency in behavior, and if they find otherwise, they become mistrustful.

So, the bottom line is to be trustworthy, no matter where you post on the old Web. Then you don't have to worry about changing your Username from site to site.

Tracy
P.S. Yes, Charlie - I found that I lived several places, too, and was involved in some very interesting stuff!

But this is still a good warning. No one should be using their real names here and should be careful about posting any treatment details that could be used against their doctor.

There have definitely been incidents of people having unpleasant things happen because they or their docs were too easy to find, based on info posted on the internet.

I'm looking for a job at the moment. You should not only google your name but also your E-MAIL address.
You can be sure any human resource person will.

lou....I'm in a strange position here as are you and doc dave....we go waaaay back nearly to this board's inception. All the old timers know my email, full name, and many if not most know the little town I'm in and have my phone# too.

But I don't have an LLMD and don't do activism unless TC or somebody asks me to send an email or sign a petition.

About the most controversial thing I get into is making jokes about sci med so I seriously doubt if anybody wants to mess with me.

I googled my email address and it took me back into some posts in the old format before Oct 2000....interesting....

btw if you don't think computers transmit info about you, ever since I clicked on that escort service link i've been getting porn spam.

I don't know what website I went on. The only ones I've been on are links from here, or searching for herbal products.

My spam box is full of crud. If I knew where I was, I'd go in and unregister. But, it won't matter, people spend hours a day tracking email addresses.

I hate to change mine, it has special meaning to me.

And regarding that person who was treated badly on here. I think 90% of those who responded were respectful.

Unfortunately, there are people who prey on the ill and tenderhearted, and we need to do our homework before just handing out our money.

But, I'm sure if you did a search on Kelmo, you would find all kinds of weird stuff...I did, and it wasn't me!

Lyme causes neuro issues, which can cause some of us to make unwise or unsafe decisions. In fact, is this not one of the major hallmarks of lyme?

It was a wonderful thing to watch contributions coming through on that earlier thread, at least while it lasted.

dave, did a search under my name: 101,000 items; 1st 2 pages had things about me; for next 40 were for some famous person & their scientific contributions....

my cousin had submitted something too for newspaper; wasn't able to bring that up.

i believe there was 1 lymenet post there; rest were other sights; newspaper articles i'd written, etc.

good warning though! [Wink] [group hug] [kiss]

Searched my email addresses, past and present and there was nothing. However when I searched my name I learned a lot!

I am an actress, who is older than I. I am a real estate agent in Houston, never been there, except the airport, also an author and a research assistant at New Mexico State University.

The research assistant's college GPA is posted and is quite a bit lower than mine. I'll keep mine, thanks! May not be able to recreate it now, but at one time I was a good student. [Big Grin]

My Lymenet username only had 19 listings.

You're right, charlie, about being in the clear. Since you don't have a lyme doc and don't have insurance issues, there isn't a whole lot the trolls can do to you. There is always the possibility of loonies harrassing anybody about anything, which is not restricted to patient forums.

These warnings are chiefly for newbies, who often seem to think that posting here is like a conversation in their living rooms. Nope, it is like being on a loudspeaker.

lou:
i don't mean to be stupid, but i'm stupid
i've been here 5 years and read all the don't post articles.

never understood why.
i think it this new algorithm that google, ask and many other search engines have started using.

it is really an invasion of privacy on a major scale that nobody really understands.

you can get a credit report on anybody for $25
and a social security number.

you can do a search for any person in the country.
police do it all the time.

i would never have though that my screen name would be fully googled.

i guess i'm really really dumb
this totally took me by surprise the extend the new search engines can go.

soon they'll put gps chips in us like dogs and cats and can find anybody on earth at any time.

hey good idea, why not do this with sex offenders.

one area near wellington where i live
has 2,500 sex offenders in a 4 mile radius.
pretty scary.
(THAT'S NOT COUNTING ME!!!!!)

oh my gosh, have i learned a lot. there are other people using randibear as a name and some of them are NOT nice...call girls, etc...

so is there some way to change my name on this forum.. maybe to a favorite town or dog or cat...

anything right now except randibear...although that has personal meaning for me, i didn't realize there are others using it.......

Randi...whatever you change your user name to It will be googlable(yes I can make up words if I want to) and somebody will have it...all possible names have probably been invented by now....stick with the one you've got or the next one may be worse.

I think randibear is a nice name.
