hubbie is worried about my weight and says go to jenny craig.

he knows i'm having a tough time with lyme and now with this weight thing. i've tried every diet on the market, na da.

i was on jenny craig many many years ago and lost a bunch of weight and liked the food too, especially eating three times a day.

so hubbie says we'll come up with the money, i buy what i want, so it's only fair. go, don't worry about it, just do it, and we'll deal with it.

so now i've got the ok and i'm afraid to go...how will dieting affect the lyme? it's a natural way to loose and you're eating more fruits and vegetables.

so are there are tips for the jenny craig diet? and, yep, no sugar, no soft drinks, etc.

i just feel bad about the money, but hey, considering what i've spent already on lyme, this is cheap.

i feel this would help my breathing problems and also my legs, etc.

i'm posting in medical because i want to know what effect the diet will have physically on the lyme or if there is another way to do it.

soooo would you do it?

Well, yeah. The whole idea is get healthy, and eating healthy sure wouldn't hurt.
I think this is exciting, and I hope you feel better.
As far as paying, I personally wouldn't and try to come up with your own way of eating healthy. There is plenty of free nutritional info on the internet. Otherwise, if you want to make it simple(due to time constraints, and not wanting to do the research), then Jenny Craig would be good.
I hope it helps. That's the first thing I did when I got sick(overnight), was abruptly stopped all sodas, sweet tea, ... and I quite smoking(not by choice, but almost pass out from taking one drag off cigarette--again, this happened overnight).

oh, i should have mentioned that i am 5 feet one and weigh 200.

i used to weigh 125 and looked really good.

now i look like a cross between roseanne barr and momma cass.......

no fun at all........

I'm excited for you, and imagine how you're going to look. Weight loss can be a long road, in itself.
I'd imagine by now, you've had your thyroid, pancreas, and so on checked(especially if you gained the weight quickly).

Did you also check for food intolerances? They can make you gain a lot of weight AND they can cause airhunger.

I have to watch what I eat. If it is white it ain't right.

I keep trying but each time I pay for it later.

Not so much in weight but how I feel.

I don't know anything about the Jenny Craig Meal Plan.

But, it does sound like it would be so much easier to have something all ready prepared for you.

try to figure out what i can eat, what he's eating, what's good, what's bad, what's on sale, is just too much for me.

i am the type of person that functions best in a controlled environment. sort of like a lab rat -- LOL....

eat this at this time, period.... simple....

i understand food allergies and all. right now any sugar makes me sick. i get nauseous, feel weak and jittery. maybe it's the caffeine.

but at this point, i'm willing to try.

I often wish I had someone doing the cooking for me and just saying, "here, eat this".

Randibear, If you really want to lose weight, go vegan. That is no animal proteins of any kind, not even dairy, eggs or butter. You will definitely lose weight.

As far as whether or not this diet longterm would be healthy for you, only a good doctor trained in nutrition can determine that. You need food allergy testing. This is not the kind of acute allergic reaction to food but rather a sensitivity to certain foods. You can't always tell on your own what you are allergic to.

Also, if you go vegan, there are certain nutrients you will lack such as B12 and you will need to supplement them.

I was vegan for 4 mths. It really helped me with my inflamation and joint pain. I finally had a food allergy test that said I had no allergic reaction to dairy or certain meats. I was reactive to chicken and egg whites so I have to avoid them. I dropped a quick 20lbs too and I wasn't overweight to begin with.

Can't hurt to try.

Just my 2 cents but I've known vegans who were overweight.

As far as weight is concerned, it ALL boils down to calories in versus calories out.

Don't eat more calories than you expend throughout the day.

The vegan way can be a healthy diet, but you have to make sure you get your protein; and as with any diet, you have to watch the amount you eat

If you need someone to help guide you through this weight loss, then Jenny Craig is probably an excellent choice.

Get the Mold Warriors book, learn about biotoxins, get some of the basic tests including Leptin and it may shed some light....

Many of us don't do well with carbs, so if Jenny Craig advocates them I am not sure I would do it.

I eat some protein, veggies, and some fruits, and stay pretty thin with that. What really helps is adding 'healthy' fats like avocados, and some coconut milk, etc., as well as drinking whey protein shakes. These things really help tide me over and keep me from missing carbs. I take lipase enzymes with the coconut milk.

If mold/fungus is an issue I would leave out the fruits.

Not always so! Fluid retention causes weight gain that has nothing to do with calories in vs calories out. A number of us lymies have fluid retention, some severe. I have gained as much as 13 lbs in one day but generally when I am actively gaining fluid it is 2-4 lbs a day with no change in eating except that if I am too active, I lose my appetite.

I guess what I'm saying randibear is that you may have a fluid problem. Something to be aware of anyway since it is such a problem for some of us.

This weight thing has befuddled me since coming down with lyme.

I usually don't eat enough to keep a bird alive.

And I eat nutritionally.

But, I weigh more now than I ever have in my life.

I think it is due to not being able to move my body like I would like to.

I am very limited on what I can do each day.

I figure in time, I will be able to do more and hopefully get back to the size I had been for years before lyme.

I know I have had mold in my life.

You mentioned an inability to eat sugar. Is there lots of sugar in the Jenny Craig food? The other issue is that, with Lyme, you may not do as well eating preservatives. I'm not sure what the ingredients are in the Jenny Craig food and if it would be bad on that side.

Another option, which may be more expensive, would be working with a really good weight loss nutritionist who would actually help you prepare food for the week that can be stored in the fridge/freezer.

That way you would learn how to shop and prepare food healthily. With Jenny Craig, I would imagine it's hard to continue after you stop the program because you haven't learned how to change the way you prepare food.

These are just thoughts. I've never done Jenny Craig. You should do what works for you and helps you get to a healthy weight first. You could always do Jenny now and then, when you feel better, work with a nutritionist.

When I talk about weight gain I'm really talking about fat gain. Water retention is a whole other story.

I can lose 2-3 lbs of water just by running 5 miles in warm weather. I wish it were fat I was losing, but it's not. Bummer!.

Although research has recently determined that there is a fat gene, fat gain for most people is primarily due to consuming too many calories.

Water retention on the other hand has a number of causes...too much salt intake, hormones, hot temperatures, some medications, lymphedema, heart disease, kidney disease etc.

The weight gained this way is generally rapid I believe. Some of these causes are easy to treat and thus rapid water weight loss would follow. Fat usually takes a lot longer to lose.

A doctor or other health care professional can accurately determine if it's fat weight versus water weight gain by performing hydrostatic weighing (underwater weighing) or using DEXA (Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry).

I cant make any recommendations about Jenny Craig, but in my personal experience fat does, indeed, act as a reservoir for toxins and losing weight carefully and with good detox protocols is generally good for your health.

The hubby experienced significant detox symptoms when he lost about 30 lbs in a short period -- headaches, nausea, joint pain, brain fog.

Liver flushes, saunas, magnesium, and lots of fiber in his diet helped.

Thanks for the info Soleilpie. Out of the dozens of doctors that I've talked to about weight/fluid gain, not one has mentioned any of the tests that you mention. Do you know what kind of Doctor would know about them?

I have been on Jenny Craig and it does work, like any diet when you stick to it! It was the easiest diet for me to stick to. It was kinda fun picking out your meals for the week in advance and just popping them in the microwave.

You still have to buy some supplemental foods such as milk, yogurt, fruit and fresh veggies.

In my opinion, it is a great idea. However,, I am not sure how your llmd feels about you eating yeast. I remember that there were some products with bread (yeast).

I had just dropped 25 pounds the last time I was sick with lyme and I went off of Jenny Craig thinking I could do the candida diet.

Well, I gained that 25 back and then some.. and now I have relapsed with lyme.

But I am also considering going back on Jenny Craig because I think at least I would be losing weight and eating healthier than I am now. Besides, I like you, need structure.

Someone to tell me, this is what you eat and when and it is all ready to go.

Let me know if you do it,, we can be diet pals together.

If it would make you feel better to loses the weight then I would try it. Sometimes just mentally feeling better can aid in the physical healing process.

For Hydrostatic weighing is generally done at health clubs and dieting organizations. There are also clinics specifically for hydrostatic weighing. You may also find them at a university or research institution.

DEXA can found at hospitals. This equipment is generally used to look at bone density but is also used also to accurately measure body composition. It differentiates body weight into the components of lean soft tissue, fat soft tissue and bone.
