PCP suggested cortisone shots in each hip. Have been on abx after another relapse, for about 2 months.
Can I blame this on the lyme relapse? In that case I will wait and hope it goes away with time.
Hate the thought of getting shots into my already painful hips!

nan, i've been going thru 2.5 wks. of physical therapy to date, and another month to go on that and my new hip groin/femur pain! having PT twice a week; monday & thurs.
surgeon wrote out PT request, using ultrasound on it, stretching exercises, and cold ice on each side when done for 10 minutes. do home exercises!
good luck; since i started going for my bursitis; it's stopped acting up so bad w/pain, but she really worked on stretching things in that area from hip to knee! Posted by nan (Member # 63) on :
Guess you've been through a lot, Betty! Thanks for your reply. PCP gave me some stretching exercises to do and if I get worse I may need the cortisone shots!
Good luck with your therapy. Do you think it could be lyme related?

I FULLY believe it could be Lyme-related!! A cortisone shot while in a relapse [or any time for a lyme patient] could throw you into a tail spin which may difficult to recover from!!

I deal with hip pain alot. It does get better with ABX. When I first was diagnosed with Lyme, I started in Physical therapy soon after.
Definitely stretching, riding recumbant bike, making sure your bones are in place all helped. Pain cremes, epsom salt baths, massage, etc. All that takes energy, and progress can seem slow, but you will make progress and naturally.
Please don't get the shot! I do think the pain is Lyme related.

My 2 cents:
Last week I had severe left hip pain for 3 days. Also full body muscle pain. Then it was gone. GONE.
I do have lyme.
A steroid shot to my knee activated the lyme. I've been so sick ever since.
I know lyme can affect the joints. Perhaps lyme is affecting your hip. I know it did mine.
If at all possible, avoid steroid shots.

Yes hips are affected by lyme. Before I knew what I had,,it hurt so much if I walked too far,,,or carried anything heavy a ways, that shorted walking distance before it HURT!!!
Darn right it is lyme, dont get a steroid shot,,,I am afraid you would regret it!!!remaining--just don

I have been on Rifampin, and I have had the worst right hip pain start up after being on Rifampin, It has been off and on, then stops, then on again. I think? it is a herx, I am not sure.
I had this hip pain before, and candida treatment helped it.
The hip pain is gone now, and I am on Rifampin, so maybe it has been a herx, off and on, it was just throbbing for awhile. Could not think of anything but that hip pain. It is gone.
I also had it while on clindamycin and azithromycin, and it was a herx, I could not sleep on that side of the hip pain, it went away.

do any of you have actually visible swelling of the hip? i have terrible joint pain all on right side and my right hip is definately swollen, looks like there is a golf ball under the skin! and its so so painful! i have tried so many creams without much relief, but oxycontin does help alittle, its nice to know i am not alone with this hip pain Radha

I have that swelling on both hips, Radha. When you press on the swelling it really hurts.
Doc called it Trochanteric Bursitis. I am a side sleeper and cannot stand the pain when I sleep. All I am taking is Aleve. It doesn't do much.
May this too pass....the sooner the better!

A classic symptom of late disseminated Lyme is inflammatory arthritis, especially of the large joints like hips and knees. Mine manifested in my elbows which prompted the Rheumy to test for Lyme.
Physical therapy, NSAIDS, heat/ice and effective abx should help clear this up.

Nan, can't your PCP prescribe some decent non-steroidal anti-inflammatories? Something like piroxicam - at least until you have a chance to work on the Lyme aspect?
I would sure try that first before doing steroid shots.
(The piroxicam is constipating but most people can compensate with supplements or fiber or prunes....)
