This is my first time treating babesia, though I had tested positive in 12-2005. I tested positive again in March,2007 and for some reason my llmd was reluctant to treat me.(he is very expeianced and well known, but I think he is kinda blowing me off.)
(I had tested neg. in between my two positives, 6-2006)
I got another Doctor (less experianced, but more willing and available.) to write me a RX for mepron.
All this to say I suppose I am chronic, though I am not that sick. I would say I am 70% my old self.....
so something has worked because I was down to about 30% function in the beginning.
MY QUESTION:
What treatment length am I looking at here to you think? Any guess appreciated. Take a wild stab in the dark.
From what I have read, sounds like four months, maybe longer.
I have been on for one week, and have had a medium size herx, and now am feeling better.... well I do have a little fever.

Hi Von. I think it is terrible that your doctor did not treat the Babesiosis when you were first positive. I am glad you are now getting treated it.
It seems that most people need to treat for four months or re-treatment is often necessary. Treating for longer than four months is not unusual.
Make sure you eat something fatty when you take the Mepron (peanut butter, cheese, etc.) or it will nto be absorbed properly. Also, Dr. B. does not think it is good to take COQ-10 when taking Mepron.
People often feel a lot better once they eradicate the Babesiosis. Good luck with your treatment!

My husband's LLMD is treating him for a minimum of four months.

My daughter is starting month four. I'm sure she will be on it for double that. If she is still sick after that, I don't know what else.

Thank you Sammi, Parisa and Kelmo. I appreciate the input. I don't feel so much like I am groping my way down a dark path, you know? Not so alone.
Question: How do they determine when to end treatment? less or no herx cycle? tests?

Hi Von
Alot depends on how long you have been sick-
Usually more than 4 months unless treated Quickly-
Babs is a tuff bug and is hard to kill off once it gets going ---
Important -Take Mepron with fatty food - Treat babs from every direction available - --Jay--

From my experience with Babs and Dr. B you must do at least 4 months preferably 5 months of Mepron treatment. One must realize BAbs is in the red blood cells and one cell I believe can last up to 4 months thus continuation of meds are important to totally eradicate. Also Zithro and Arteminsin should be part of the Mix otherwise the Mepron will not work as well and the Babs can becoem resistant!

I did mepron for seven months. I took about seven months after that to get a relapse. I'm now on malorone. Boy do I feel so much better.
