Does Rifampin attack lyme bugs or can it "only" kill bartonella??? Just curious

I presently am taking Rifampin and Doxy for Bart but my doc said the two should hit any Lyme thats there too. Second time for me on Rifampin, it sure packs quite a wallop!

I've heard it treats Bart and Ehrlichia. I'm on it now, but also with Doxy.

Hi all.
Just looked it up.
Rifampin actually decreases the effectiveness of the following:
antifungals
doxycycline
Fluoroquinolones
There are many more but these were definitely noteworthy.

I have read things like that too, maybe rifampin is not that good of a drug... What else out there treats bart???

Byron, Rifampin is great for Bart. It helped my daughter. It took about six months. Rifampin and zith or doxy is a good combo.
Rifampin is said to pack a whollop. Near the end of six months, she was trying to do four days on, three days off. Her stomach was a mess.
I also believe, for her, adding vitamin D (she has tended to be a hermit since being sick) really helped push things along.
Right now she is in Babs treatment. It's HARD.
HARD doesn't even describe. I don't think I can print what it is.
I think of you missing school. My daughter also missed the last two years of school. She had completed most of her core classes, so they modified her electives, and all she had to do were book reports.
Which was great, because with her insomnia, she was pushing out a novel in two nights.
She graduated on time, took two vicodin and attended a small ceremony at the District alternative school with all the pregnant girls.
It was rumored she quit school because she was pregnant. Ha...she said she hasn't had a phone call from a boy in four years!
She is now doing one online class at a time with the community college.
Just thought I would give you a smidge of hope. You can take baby steps forward. Someday those steps will get bigger and bigger.

A lot of people are on the Rifampin/doxy or Rifampin/zith combo. And I've seen the literature Geneal mentions also. My LLMDs have blown that off - and since the combo seems to be working for people, maybe they are right?
FWIW, I was also told that Rifampin hits Lyme, possibly the cyst form. Wouldn't that be somethin'? It would explain why people seem to herx so hard on it......

I talked to C nurse today, she said rifampin does "not" treat lyme, just bartonella.
I have not tired malarone/ babesia treatment yet with Crists, I have been taking small amount of artimisini so if I do have babs, and do herx from it, it wont be so bad.....
Now I have a new question, for you people that have bartonella and herx with bartonella treatment, is you herx similar to your lyme herx or is it different from a lyme herx? I started taking rifampin for several days in a row and started to feel like I was herxing, I have been off 2.5 days now and still feeling it! but it feels almost exactly like a lyme herx though...

Try a lymenet search for bartonella herx There are two pages, going back to 2005 with lots of good info.
Also, do a search for rifampin lyme. There were 241 entries, so your answer may be in there.
All these were in "medical" searches.

It is not a good idea to take Rifampin, then go off for awhile, and then try to go back on. If a person tries to go back on it, they are often unable to tolerate as high a dose. I have taken very brief breaks, like missing one dose, if I was really too sick, but never allow myself to go for extended periods without it.
As I mentioned earlier, Rifampin treats both Bart and Ehlichia, so you may also be experiencing Ehrlichia die-off.
I almost never herx on Lyme meds (despite clearly having Lyme), yet my herxes on Bartonella meds are like a scary movie - very severe. But then again, my supposed Bart symptoms themselves are bizarre and severe, so any herxing which makes them worse would account for my reactions.

I've been on rifampin now for quite awhile. I did herx a lot in the beginning--different for me than my herxes on ceftin.
I think this abx has helped me a lot. The one time I tried to cut back on dosage, symptoms came back wtih a vengeance.
Sorry to hear about school and I just hope you start feeling better.

Someone ,within the past few days, posted a link to Dr. B's conference notes for the UK/European conference/2007.
Towards the end of the outline, he lists recommended abx for the various tbi's. In the "cyst" form, he lists rifampin, but he has placed a question mark after it.
