Here I was all excited. I drank ONLY tonic water yesterday, and I have to say, I felt a little better than normal - though my bowel movements were orange this morning.

So I thought I'd order some quinine, only it appears this is a prescription drug. Please tell me I'm wrong.

I'm really bummed out here because it seems I'm forever destined to rely on the pharmaceutical industry for my health - and at a great cost.

I believe quinine can be dangerous.....


FDA Quinine Warning:

[Posted 12/12/2006] FDA informed healthcare professionals and consumers that the Agency ordered firms to stop marketing unapproved drug products containing quinine, citing serious safety concerns, including deaths associated with quinine products.

There are multiple unapproved products containing quinine currently on the market, used off-label to treat leg cramps and similar conditions.

Since 1969, FDA received 665 reports of adverse events with serious outcomes associated with quinine use, including 93 deaths.

Quinine drugs are associated with serious side effects, such as cardiac arrhythmias, thrombocytopenia, and severe hypersensitivity reactions.

Qualaquin, manufactured by Mutual Pharmaceutical Company, is the only quinine product approved by the FDA.

But why would they ban quinine? There are MANY MORE adverse reactions (including deaths) to some of the most common and profitable presciption medications out there.

Tonic water helps. I'm depressed.

I think it was just some of the compounded preparations that were banned. The powder itself seems to be freely available...I'd sure read up and be careful using it...it can mess your hearing up among other things.

Personally, I think they pulled it so they could market [in a BIG way], the new med for Restless Leg Syndrome...just my thoughts!!

OR... the quinine was coming from China and it was tainted??... just guessing

Prior to last year, it had been on the market for IONS!!

Tailz...artemisinin works very well for babs/malaria. You need to take it with a quinolone for best results.

i just bought a litre and have had 2 glasses then read about the calories and sugar content.

not too good if you're trying to loose weight...

I had taken OTC quinine (Leg-a-trin or something) for muscle spasms years ago and thought I would go insane from the ear roaring. I only took one pill and told the LLMD to forget it.

Thanks for the info! My husband, just yesterday, forced me to drink tonic water since he knew that the quinine helped with Malaria. He lived in Africa for a while and knew lots of Africans that dealt with Malaria this way. He was on doxy for 14 months while he was there to prevent getting Malaria.

I'm going to try the powder since I really don't like tonic unless it's mixed with gin and lime.

fluroquinolones (cipro, levaquin, avelox, ect) and quinine do not appear to be related at all, just sort of a verbal overlap....

I just had a prescription filled for Qualaquin and it was the only one my insurance would not pay for!!
The pharmacist told me that a few years ago... Alot of manufacturers made this and it was so readily available that it was also cheap. Like $5 a script.

Now.. There is only one manufacturer in the US that makes it.

He explained something to do with testing/research and that because it is an anti malaria drug and we do not have malaria in the US that they had stopped do research on this drug. Therefore the cost of my script was $144.00.

And my insurance did not pay for it!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not buying it that we don't have malaria in the US. My malaria came back equivocal, and I'm not too convinced that what I have is babs. We'll see.

Regardless, if we have one case of malaria in the US, I guarantee we have MANY.
