Hi Everyone
I started taking flagyl a week ago and about the 3rd day I started feeling really weak and sick. I wake up at night the sheets are soaking wet from my sweat. I am looking for advice if this would be a herx or could it be that the flagyl itself has nasty side effects. I have read where flagyl can be hard to tolerate.

Hey there...

Welcome to Lymenet. Sorry you are feeling like the floor of a new york taxi cab. [Smile]

I have not taken flagyl, but I have read hear by others that it's no cake walk.

Lymetoo?? Can you help? (I remember talking to her about Flagyl)

Hang in there!! Others will post their experiences. You are not alone.

Flagyl kicked my butt. After 10 days I had to be scraped off the LR floor. I could not function at any level while on it.

I hope you do better than I.

I was on Flagyl for almost 2 months, when I ramped up a little too fast during the 3rd week I got costochronditis (started in lower front rib cage and moved to back) and my knee pain came back...when I lowered my dose back down a little I was fine and I eventually got up to the 250mg 3x day for the last 3 weeks.

Went on Bactrim after 7th week because I got a urinary tract infection.

I'm not sure if I improved more on it or the Zithromax I took previously that I didn't seem to herx on. My LLMD has us start all meds at a low dose and ramp up to the common Lyme dosages so that we don't herx.

Hope this helps!

Flagyl is extremely hard. For me, it seemed to be a major herx though. Mine would start within hours of taking it.

But, if you can make it through, people seem to do much better from it.

I have done flagyl and still doing it some. A 1/4th of a 20mg flagyl pill would knock me on the floor for a day or two. Right now I can handle 1/2 a pill but still get my head knocked off! [bonk]

Byronsbell,
I am taking 1/2 a tablet and I feel that I have rubber legs. My wife and I went to a movie and halfway through she noticed I was soaked with sweat. I told her not to worry, but if I start foaming at the mouth and my eyes turn red, you better run

Hubby has done flagyl. He has done 1/4 pill, and a few times the full pills.

It's really hard on him.

Wow! I have been taking Flagyl for a little more than a month. 500mgs x2/day, 4days on, 3 off.

I am not sure if these sweats and flashing are due to the abxs or the humid weather we are having in the east. [Roll Eyes]

I really don't like the aftertaste of the Flagyl.
Tried chasing with something to eat but, still there. Any suggestions?

Eeekkk..I am getting ready to start it 500mg 2x day along with Ceftin & Biaxin..Sounds like this might be a doozy. Wonder why I was not started off slower on it??

Yes Yes Yes-dip pill in olive oil before swallowing-goes down smooth. Worked for me.
[Big Grin]

Flagyl was brutal the first time around. Got easier with each pulse- so much so I asked the LLMD why she was stopping it-she said to lesson the possibility of develping neuropathy or something.

I may be able to take it again after a break.

A spoonful of Olive Oil helps the medicine go down-learned that on Lymenet.

Take Care,
Carol

I try to take it in the middle of the meal and chase it with food ASAP. If that doesn't work, I eat a bit of peanut butter. Covers the taste right up, but some on the anti-yeast diet can't eat PB, so do what's right for you.

I just asked my pharmacist if there is any generic flagyl that has a coating of any kind and he said he'd look into it. If he turns up a manufacturer for me I'll post so you can ask your pharmacist for it.

BTW, if it bothers you that much, name-brand Flagyl has a lovely blue coating and doesn't leave a taste ever. We're just not willing to cough up the extra $25 per person per month for the name-brand. [Razz]

Thanks Carol. This would probably work with any abx. I am going to try it now.

[lick] Well, it was better and the EVOO is good for you too!

Flagyl has been the only ABX so far that made me shudder and gag. I took generic-and it seemed as though it would start to dissolve the nanosecond it hit my mouth.

So remember- pass it on when the opportunity presents itself.

Take Care,
Carol

Byron, are you doing better now? Or still having a rough time?

cornhusker, just go easy on the flagyl. Hubby has taken a full pill in the past, but he really crashed after that. He's doing 1/3 of a pill every few days now. That seems to work much better.

Take care.
