Since i have been sick with Lyme (5 yrs) i have lactated. Now my youngest is 9 y/o soooo. When i started treatment 1 1/2 yrs. ago LLMD says it's from Lyme. But LLMD is now ordering a 2nd mamogram. Now i had a mamogram 4 yrs ago for the same thing after my hystorectomy (because of Lyme). Due to discoloration of the lactation. LLMD said guys get this as well. Neg on breast cancer or anything else ( like usual) from last testing. Tender is an understatment. No swelling, red or hot spots. Nothing is new or changed, just time gone by. Caffein will/ always has made it worse. Anyone else have this? What treatment worked for any of you? Thnks, Shonna.

Have you had an MRI to check for a pituitary tumor?

There are medicines people can take for prolactinomas. Many with lyme have pituitary issues. I would have a full endocrine panel done and see and endocrinologist, along with the brain MRI.

I agree with pineapple, many times lyme can cause elevated prolactin levels which results in lactation.

When I was very sick a few years ago, my prolactin was very elevated and docs suspected a pit tumor. Well, it turned out that it was all caused from lyme, and once I got all my TBD's under control the levels went down.

I get this beige-green crust on my nipples. It is usually intermittent and is starting up again. I also have enlarged lymph nodes in my groin again - they are the size of kidney beans.

I had my prolactin levels checked several times in the past (not recently though) - they were fine.

I had a breast smear - it came back 'positive foam cells' - (milk cells).

Both my PAP and mammogram were abnormal in 2006 and needed further evaluation.

My repeat PAP returned to normal.

My breast ultrasound, which followed the mammogram, was okay, but I was supposed to go back for more ultrasounds and never did.

I'm afraid they will give me cancer by zapping the little bit I have.

I just thought of something - since we're talking about lactation - I actually posted a thread about this, but it got lost.

Did you happen to have difficulty breast-feeding after childbirth?

I had a heck of a time because I would put my daughter on one breast, and then they BOTH would start emptying - and FAST.

Needless to say, I didn't do it very long.

I also had problems in the delivery room - the nurse told me she hadn't seen anything like this in all her 20-some odd years of L and D nursing...

I had an unstoppable urge to push because my daughter had dropped below a certain bone way too early in my labor. I guess normally the baby drops AFTER a woman dilates enough. I wasn't dilated, but gosh, I had to push.

Was this Lyme, also?

I can't answer your other questions, but I wanted to mention that this is normal. The breast "let down" together.

I also lactate-Have never been pregnant and have normal prolactin levels. My LLMD said he see's it all the time and beleives it is where the ketes distrupt the milk ducts. You will normally only have a pituitary problem (prolactinoma or similar) if your prolactin levels are high, good to get it scanned perhaps though.

Ditto Rianna. Never had a baby, normal prolactin levels but have had milk production for 2 years now.

This happened to me once, when i was about 20 and sure freaked me out as I had not had any children!

I think Lyme can do this, it was around the time I started to get weird symptoms more frequently.

But, make sure you get the brain MRI also, just in case, and see an Endocrinologist.

Wow!
thanks for all the input, didn't know if this topic would be approprate or not. Sigh of relief. I have not had any brain MRI's done so i will be requesting that. I am also going to check to see if insurance will approve an endocrinologist as well. I do believe i had my prolaction levels done, just don't remeber the results. My gyn had me on testosterone cream due to practicly none was being produced. I recently went off and no changes either way. Thanks for suggestions, sorry...but glad to know i realy am not alone on this one. Shonna.

I had a simliar experience too. Right after I came down with my first symptoms, I had slight bleeding in one of my breast. My daughter had been weened for approx. 6 months. I had blood work done and they tried to do a duct-a-gram. They found nothing. Five years later, I still have the yellow/green crust-no blood.

I am glad you posted this topic I always wondered if this could be Lyme related.
