when i went to the doctor i told him about all that white stringy stuff in my mouth, chest pain, trouble breathing, fatigue, tons of symptoms. i do the spit test and man, it just makes a big stringy blob...
he changed the levaquin to omnicef 500 mg twice a day. i never took the levaquin. a great big hug to all of you who told me about it.
i asked for diflucan but my doc said, no, i have too many liver issues.
i really think i'm having yeast issues but can't convince him.
i've been taking theralac every day along with ceftin 500 twice a day. i take the theralac separate tho.
anything i can do? i'm doing the diet, yep, all the right things, etc, but i still think it's yeast. i have the dark red fingers to prove it. cause when i treated the yeast, the red fingers went away, that's how i know.
soooo, how serious have your yeast issues been and how can i convince the doc to give me difulcan? and if he won't, is there a SURE-FIRE methods to treat it homeopathically or whatever??

I take VSL#3, it has 450 billion organisms per packet. I also take Theralac and Ultra Flora.
Will your doctor give you Nystatin?
Have you tried some of the herbal remedies -- things like caprylic acid? I'm sure someone at your local health food store will have some suggestions on other things you can take.
I eat lots of coconut oil ... it kills yeast.

Great Advice from SixGoofyKids!
Dark green leafy veggies are good for you. You need to take much more acidophilus products than you are. Also, try making your own homemade 24 hour yogurt. That will be teeming with a lot of probiotics.
You can also get Custom Probiotics and order whatever strain of probiotics you want.
Many drs. do not believe in yeast/candida problems, but those who have suffered it know how devastating it can be. I don't see how you can NOT take Diflucan. There are simple blood tests to monitor your liver. DIflucan has proven very safe over the years in adults and children. (Sporonox is much harder on the liver.) Lyme makes us immunocompetent. You most likely NEED a strong script to beat back the yeast overgrowth. Yeast toxins can be very harmful and interfere with your immune system.
I would try to get another dr. to prescribe it for you. Call around and tell them about the antibiotics & get your records regarding your liver problems for the dr. to review..
There is an allicidin product that supposedly works against yeast and fungus and bacterial and viral infections.
Also, Olive Leaf Extract is very good against yeast and viruses.

Please forgive me if this seems dense: but can antibiotics cause vaginal yeast infections for women?
I thought they were known to do that but no one seems to talk about the possibility on this board.

Ellie, it can.

Ellie - Yes. After 2 months on abx for sinus infections many years ago, I had a one year battle linger on.
Randibear - I recommend trying Cumanda. It's an herb you can buy through nutramedix.com.
It is used as part of the Cowden protocol against Lyme, but I used cumanda alone to fight yeast while on abx. I can't follow the diet because I can't digest veggies or fat. I had no yeast problems while taking Cumanda, and I have a history of yeast.
I started at one drop once a day and built up to 20 drops twice a day.
I always recommend informing your doctor of any supplements you want to take.

I haven't tried this but it's a very stong garlic product. They tout it for treating everying from the common cold to the super virus to Lyme. I'm guessing it would be great for yeast but not sure what the dose would be.
Again I have NO experience with this product but I am considering trying it. I am going to show it to my Dr. next visit.

Have not had a yeast problem in 8 years on abx-!!
Took prophylactic diflucan for a while- and an Anti-Yeast Formula-

Hi randibear. My LLMD has me taking 4 nystatin tabs a day while on antibiotics to prevent yeast. I take probiotics daily also. I had oral yeast a few months ago prior to my Lyme diagnosis and my PCP gave me 1 diflucan tab and that cleared it up. A lot of good suggestions on the posts. Good luck with getting rid of it. Liz

I had/have it pretty bad. Cant eat sugar or most carbs, without feeling like crap. Stiff joints neck, knees, and a hungover feeling in my head.
I can cheat more now it seems...but i dont overdue the sugar. I think some of my sugar reaction is the lyme.
I havent been on abx since nov 06...and i still have problems. The vag yeast was a huge problem for me on abx(never had one all my life until i got lymed) I had one for a year strait.

I sympathize I battled yeast for a couple of years an still have to be very careful and maintain the balance..Probotics, probotics, probotics..My ARPN turned me on to some super stuff called Russian choice. it is a herbal formula. I have used Diflucan on numerous occasions with good results. I still have to limit my sugar, carbs, and any drinks containing yeast, but things are better. I just wished my nausea would go away. I'd give my right arm for a big ole burger...

It is talked about constantly. Just do a search here and type in my member # 743. It will bring up plenty of past discussions.
It can cause vaginal or systemic yeast and you don't want either! MEN need to realize that they can easily get systemic yeast if they are not taking acidophilus and following a good diet.
It is my non-medical opinion that everyone on long term abx should be on NYSTATIN. There's no reason NOT to be on it.
Randi......DEFINITELY ask him for a script for Nystatin tablets. The powder is nasty and the liquid contains sugar! It IN NO WAY affects the liver.
There are numerous herbal remedies in the info below:
DIET, DIET, DIET is the key. Then, be sure to follow the 5 step plan outlined below. It was developed by my naturopath. It works.
"Successful control and elminiation of a Candida Albicans overgrowth requires a multifaceted program as described below. Failure to follow ALL the steps simultaneously will result in slow progress and will lengthen healing time significantly. The program should be tailored to the individual and must balance the need to eliminate the Candida and deprive it of its food source while insuring proper nutrition for the individual."
Five Steps to Candida Elimination:
1. You must starve it into submission by eliminating its food source.
2. You must kill it with anti-fungal herbs and supplements. [e.g....garlic, onion, caprylic acid, Pau D'Arco capsules or tea, clove, grapefruit seed extract, olive leaf extract, oil of oregano, tea tree oil, Echinacea, Goldenseal, black walnut, MSM, barberry root, uva ursi, neem leaf, biotin]
3. You must reestablish the proper balance and quantity of probiotic bacteria in the digestive tract. [...multi-strain lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidus capsules with FOS should be taken between meals to maximize repopulation of the digestive tract by beneficial bacteria.]
4. You must reestablish proper levels of all B vitamins (yeast free) and utilize other immune enhancing supplements to boost immune system function. [e.g ... B complex vitamins (yeast free), biotin, beta 1-3 glucan, colostrum, maitake mushroom, vitamins A, C, E, zinc and selenium]
5. You must cleanse and heal the digestive tract to promote proper elimination of toxins and Candida and assimilation of nutrients. [e.g...chlorophyll, MSM, omega 3 fatty acids found in flax seed and salmon oils, GLA found in borage, evening primrose and black currant oils. Pantothenic acid, digestive enzymes between meals]

Excellent post Lymetoo! I would just like to mention one thing. This is not meant to start a debate or anything, but some people (me & a few others I've been in contact with regarding yeast) have difficulty with the FOS. Once I cut out FOS, I did much better. This is not true for everyone, but for me it was true.
So, if you think the probios are causing you trouble, try a probio without FOS--just something to keep handy in the back of your mind.

I recently found out that my severe allergies to MOLD is caused by intestinal yeast. Just another thing that the ducks dont wanna talk about.
I started getting upset when the antihistamines stopped working. My sensitivity progressed to the point where just smelling mold made my feet burn, and Im here in my parents house where we have mold, and the AC air smells musty, so you can imagine the hell Im in ATM. They even had it cleaned last year, just blew the mold around the basement, that's all. Doesn't bother them AHH!!!
Anyway Ive been working up my Nystatin dosage the past couple months. If I take even a half tab, Im out. Meaning that I cant get up for about 4 hours, and Im very groggy and depressed and have trouble breathing too.
Needless to say I have candida. My antibodies were elevated once and thats all. The stool sample didnt work so the doctor wants me to do it again.
Diflucan just made me sick, I felt poisoned. So I herx on just about anything that kills yeast. Even Pau'd'arco

LymeHerx,
Are you taking antibiotics?
Have you tried Nystatin Powder? You can start with a smaller dose than the tablets and work up.
You may need to start just with diet and eliminating all sugar and simple carbs.
Do you know how fortunate you are that any anti-fungal you take works so well? Many of us have yeast that is resistant.
Olive Leaf & Thyme are also good anti-fungals, too.

Yes, I think it's a milk product, isn't it?

Hi, FOS is Fructooligosaccharides. They are naturally occurring simple carbohydrates found in Jerusalem artichoke. I think the idea of including it in probiotics was to give the probiotics "food" to use. A pre-biotic.
Therealac uses a different pre-biotic which doesn't cause a probelm for me.
I also have a problem with psyllium. I get a yeast flare whenever I take it. The yeast adapted to it over time and feeds off of it.

Currentlly Im not on antibiotics. Was on them for 3+ years. Mostlly biaxin, but it consipated me. Doc said just stay with the probiotics and not to worry about yeast. WHoa!!
When ever I would stop the antibiotics my symptoms would get worse in about 1-2 weeks. I always thought this was lyme related. Now somehow I think that the yeast was growing even more and making me feel ill when I went off the antibiotics. Maybee the BIAXIN was feeding a specific type of yeast that made me constipated and that yeast fought off the others. So When I stopped they all partied.
Im addressing it now!! Im just psst that the LLMD didnt have me on this stuff before. These mold allergies and Chemical sensitivities make me wanna live in a bubble.

How can the yeast adapt to psyllium? Even more strange how can it feed off it. It doesnt have any sugars in the there. No carbs. Just fiber.
Im drinking psyllium every day now. How long before this happens to me too?
