My sister is being treated for Lyme (late stage) She has been on abx for almost 2 months now and does not have any improvement at all. She asked me the following, "How long does herxing last, though? I've been in strong pain for months. Started actually writing it all down about 3-4 weeks ago, and not a day without high pain... although today it's a little more tolerable than some. Fever not subsiding. I have no idea if I'm herxing. But I can say nothing is improving."
Is this normal? I herxed too when I was treated for late stage CNS Lyme, but it was not continuous and I started getting better much quicker. I was on IV Rocephin. She is on orals. Does that make a difference?????

In the beginning I felt so bad that I couldn't tell the difference between herxing and not herxing. After the bacterial load dropped some, I can now tell the difference.
Is she feeling the same as before she started the meds or worse. If worse, I would say she must be killing something. If the same, I would wonder whether the drug is doing anything at all for her.
I don't think there's a clear answer to your question. It varies from person to person.

How long has your sister had lyme? What is she being treated with? When people have lyme for a long period of time they dont always herx until they have been receiving treatment for an extended period of time. I have also noticed that I do not approve on some medications, herx on some then feel better, and improve without herxing on others. I also only herx for a few days.
Everybody is differnt and there is no way to truely tell. I was told by my LLMD, however, that you should not experience any new symptoms while on treatment. She should rpobably check with her doctor to find out.

If there is an undiagnosed co-infection that has not been treated, than that could be the problem.
