Hi,

I have been on Mepron for about 5 weeks now. I have been having terrible trouble with a binge eating disorder that had been in check for well over a year. I am wondering if anyone has had problems with their appetite while on this drug.

Now at the sametime as going on this drug I had a very traumatic event happen in my life so I am wondering if this eating is from that issue.

Any thoughts?

Judith

Hi Judith,

I am just starting week five on Mepron/Azith combo. I'm not exactly binging, although I've had more craving for sweets (not great for my yeast).

I HAVE noticed that I'm more cranky and definitely more exhausted on Mepron. Been taking long naps nearly every day and then sleeping through most nights as well.

Although I also experience bouts of insomnia, maybe once per week.

Anybody else have weird side effects with Mepron?

Elizabeth

My daughter got nauseated. She was in so much depression, she now says she was on the verge of asking to be admitted to a mental hospital.

She could only handle four months. The pain in her spine and brain were too great.

I think it brought her forward, though.

She has started minocycline now.

My husband feels a little "green" on Mepron and getting him to eat enough is a problem especially on the days when he cycles in the artemisinin. If we could blend your feeling and my husband's it would be just about right!

I've been taking Mepron, Plaquenil and Zith (took me off Zith almost two weeks ago) for 2 months. Lost a lot of weight in beginning. Sleep difficulties, testy mood, now depression is setting in (going to LLMD tomorrow). But I do crave sugar, and sometimes I eat it. But remember Lyme thrives on sugar (according to Barriscono sp!). So, MAYBE? if you are not eating carbs or sugars, you make have low blood sugar and your body needs energy?

Judith, I thought I was alone in the increased appetite while on Mepron!

Seems that many people lose their appetite while on it, but I did not. I constantly felt that my blood sugar was low, and that I needed to eat, so I found myself grazing more than normal.

If you've had prior issues with eating disorders, then perhaps it's also possible that the herx is bringing those issues back to the surface especially considering that you're under stress now.

Some people seem to have an increase in OCD type symptoms when herxing, I think, so it seems possible that eating issues could pop up as well.

Elizabeth, your description pretty well fits my experiences with Mepron. Have you read through any of the old Mepron or Babs Buddies threads?

If only I did get an increase in appetite from it! Gosh, I'm never hungry and have to force myself to eat.

I did feel bad on it for quite some time. It caused terrible emotional herxes, so if you're going through a tough time on top of that, I'd bet that is the problem.

Elizabeth, I had very emotional herxes ... I'd cry at nothing as a herx was coming on, and I'm not the "crying type." I also felt total fatigue. I would also have "Lyme rage" which I don't have much of anymore. I had terrible night sweats and air hunger, too.

I finally am having no babs symptoms at all after 7 months on the meds, so I'll be switched to Malarone (just to be sure we got it all) at my next LLMD visit. I am not having all these weird symptoms anymore. I'm also not sleeping all the time anymore ... so my insomnia is becoming a problem (I've always had it off and on). I think the weird things are from herxing rather than the meds ... or else I would still be having all that weird stuff going on.

I'm taking 4-5 teaspoons of mepron a day now, and I don't have much appetite. I have kind of a low-grade nausea constantly.

I'm more fatigued than normal, too, but the worst thing for me is the depression. I cry at everything and nothing seems good.

Hi GenaD,

I'm not questioning your Dr. advice, but why are your taking 4-5 tsp a day of Mepron?! 2 is about all I can stomach. Does your LLMD think you have particularly bad case of Babs? [Eek!]

My LLMD is Dr. S in South Fl...he recently did a research study on mepron which found that higher doses are killing Babesia better, so he asked if I wanted to try...I said I would.

I have a moderate case of Babs. I was handling 3 tsp pretty well and thought I'd try the higher dose. I only did one day at 5 tsp, and I did several days at 4. It was rough, I have to say. Not so much with my stomach, but the depression got REALLY bad.

I talk to my llmd this Tuesday and we'll see what he says. I want to think I'm really going after the Babesia, but I don't know if I can handle the depression.
