For some unknown reason patients with Lyme in Maryland are also testing positive for Salmonella.

The Maryland patients seem to be more prone to this infection than Lyme patients in other states (according to a LLMD)... but there are patients in other states who have tested positive.

If not treated early, the infection can enter the blood stream and become a chronic condition that can present with joint pain and other symptoms. It can require long term antibiotic therapy.

Do you or someone you know have Salmonella? Have you been tested? Or treated?

Looking for comments.. and thanks!

I have not been tested for Salmonella

I have asked one LLMD (about 2 years ago) and he said he won't test for that. Really adamant about it. [shake]

I asked him after you had mentioned it to me as a suggestion because of the type of pain I was experiencing. (I didn't tell him you said so; maybe I should have. [Wink] )

I had a wicked case of food poisoning, the full week kind, that I got in Maryland in 1986.

Any idea how to get someone to pull the test?

Kind a between docs ATM.

Thanks for the reminder, kiddo!

Tincup,
There are several of us in VA also who test positive. I wonder if it is because the Dr.'s here are testing for it?

I know for sure I have had food poisoning twice. Very nasty infection!I get improvement in joint pain with Levaquin which leads me to think it is working on Salmonella as well as Bart.Thats my 2 cents.

I've repeatedly tested very positive for salmonella. I'm in VA - maybe my LLMD knew to test for it for that reason?

At a 2004 conference on Lyme & TBIs, a well known LLMD said that ticks have been found to carry salmonella, but that is the only link I've been able to find between ticks and salmonella.

It would be interesting to see if many of us have salmonella, or if it's more localized to MD/VA.

I've had some hefty bouts with food poisoning in the past, but all were prior to my Lyme diagnosis. I can't remember being tested for salmonella before my LLMD ordered it.

Chronic salmonella can be very painful, and can cause more than just GI issues - lots of joint pain, etc. Ouch!

Tincup, are these recent tests of positive salmonella? First thing I thought about was the Peter Pan Peanut Butter source back in Feb 07.

That is what is so scarey about the out of control insects, they are carrying so many different viruses, parasites, fungus and bacteria. They are become super bugs that abx seem to not be killing.
