Having just completed two months of Rocephin IV I am having severe loose stools in the A.M. only for the last three weeks.
I expect to do Rocephin for six-nine months but my Lyme Practioner has told me to stop all antibiotics (Rocephin, flagyl) for one week.
She has prescribed Cholestyramine for one week. I am told this is to bind all the bad toxins. I notice after one day my stools are starting to form a bit more.
I have brought a GI Doc on board and he did a colonoscopy (fine) and said he believes it's the antibiotics causing all the loose stools.
It's not explosive diarrhea, just stools loose enough not to be able to leave the house till about noon.
Any input would help???? Experiences????

I've been on Rocephin (2gm per day) and Zith and Flagyl for a little over 4 months. To keep down the loose stools, I use:
Theralac (1-2 times per day) Another probiotic (1-2 times per day) saccromyces B. - ( 2 times per day)
If I feel my gut is getting too irritated or stool is too loose, I might cut back on my supplements a bit to see if one of them is contributing (many times it is). I also try to eat more fiber and bulk (brown rice). Whey protein powder can be binding too.
It is a hard balance to maintain because I want to stay frequent, but not "whooshing" (sorry).
I find that I can't, for example take magnesium at the same level everyday. Some days I have to take less, or I get the loose stools more. It is not always the antibiotics causing the problem. It can be food, supplements, time of month (for women), stress levels and combinations of these things.
In any case, I hope you resolve soon. Not being able to leave the house for periods of time is not much fun.

I was under the impression that once you started anti-biotics, that you couldn't quit for a week or so until your side effects cleared up. I thought you had to keep up a constant attack to get results.

I am on IV Rocephin and Flgyl and was also havign a problem with loose stools. You need to get checked for C. Diff and have your doctor for a yeast sulture to make sure yeast isnt growing in your gut. I take about 12 probiotics per day and still got yeast growing in my gut! I also follow yeast diet.
