I just started doing a cat's claw treatment a week ago (6 months before I ended a year-long minocycline treatment).

My doctor put me on this because I'm still having some minor neurological symptoms.

Anyway, he explained it to me, and I've been taking it without any problems.

My question is -- what is it supposed to do? Am I supposed to have a reaction? I haven't been able to get him on the phone to ask my questions...

There is a lot of information online about cat's claw.
Stephen Buhner's book, Healing Lyme, may be helpful for you.

Okay, I googled and found this:

Cat's Claw, herbal properties and actions
http://www.rain-tree.com/catclaw.htm

Main Actions
stimulates immune system
reduces inflammation

Cat's Claw Information
http://www.raysahelian.com/catsclaw.html

Cat's claw is a remarkably potent inhibitor of TNFalpha production.
The primary mechanism for cat's claw anti-inflammatory actions appears to be immunomodulation via suppression of TNFalpha synthesis.
TNF stands for tumor necrosis factor.

Cat's claw is an effective antioxidant.

This plant is an effective treatment for osteoarthritis and probably rheumatoid arthritis.

Human volunteers who took cat's claw herb for 8 weeks had improved DNA repair.

Cat's claw herb total alkaloids exert a beneficial effect on memory impairment induced by the dysfunction of cholinergic systems in the brain and that the effect of the total alkaloids is partly attributed to the oxindole alkaloids tested.

Yikes, I should be cured by now, lol.

I'vew been on whole cats claw for a long time (since the end of 2005). I can't say I see direct improvements from it anymore (not like in the beginning when I started taking it).

I guess that when our load of critters fall, we don't see immediate help with almost anything. I keep taking it as it tests good against ehrlichia & borrelia, which I still seem to have in low amounts. It seems to cross the b/b barrier too (according to my kinesiological tests).

Another thing that may help in the last phases (and during active infection) is eleutherococcus senticosus. It's a profound tonic to the whole body, according to Buhner. I just received a batch, tested it (through muscle tests) and it tested excellent.

It's the first time something tests 'excellent' for me. So I'll ge going for it. 1st chinese has it for low price, I buy it in powder. the only problem is that it tests good to be taken in separate from most foods and supplements, so I wait half an hour to take this.

I use Samento rather than whole cat's claw and I can testify that it definitely helps depression. I can't take drugs for my secondary depression, so I would not be without it.

It also makes me herx unbearably at any dose higher than 5 drops daily, so I've never gotten up to the minimum treatment dose of 15 drops daily. (Samento is a liquid, and 60 times stronger than whole cat's claw).

Hmm I have just regular cat's claw... I'm up to 5 drops now with no effect. So I hope that's good..

According to a German physician and researcher:

http://www.lymenet.nl/europe/viewtopic.php?p=93#p93

"Samento wirkt nicht; ist im Gegenteil leicht wachstumsfrdernd auf die Borrelien und sollte auf keinen Fall eingenommen werden (hier habe ich schon persnlich viele Flle erlebt, denen es nach Absetzung von Samento deutlich besser ergangen ist)"

Translation (to the best of my efforts):

"Samento does not work; rather the opposite because it promotes growth of Borreliae and should not be taken (I have personally seen many cases, where there was clear improvement after stopping with Samento)."

In a yet unpublished study from this MD, in vitro tests were done to study the effects on Borreliae of several antibiotics and other substances including Samento. The result was that Samento didn't kill the Borreliae, but actually stimulated its growth! [Eek!]

As for the "Samento does not work" comment, that's a load of Bovine Shcitology, it does indeed work. Just another medical clown trying to make a name for himself.

A 8-month pilot study was recently conducted with 28 patients suffering from Advanced Chronic Lyme borreliosis. All the patients tested positive for Lyme borreliosis utilizing the Western Blot blood test for Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacteria that causes Lyme disease. The control group was treated with antibiotics, and at the end of the study, from 14 patients in the group,

See http://www.alternativehealth.citymax.com/page/page/1678758.htm

Control Group: A few patients experienced slight improvement, and the rest remained with no positive change in their clinical condition at the end of the study

Experimental Group: 100% of patients experienced marked clinical improvement; 85% were seronegative for Lyme borreliosis at end of study

I could site many other studies, many others ...

I tried some cats claw. The results were inconclusive- at least as far as anything obvious goes. But maybe the cats claw was one more thing in there that helped me. So go for it! Keep trying lots of things, and increase anything that shows signs of helping.
