Well, I have one month to my first LLMD appt, and am all but
certain I have babs. Do any of you have advice as to which
supplement-oriented protocols I could use to give myself a little
bit of a leg up while I'm in the home stretch here, but which aren't
so potent that I'll have a herx (if this is avoidable) ? I'm in college , so until I get the official
diagnosis and with it, a plausible excuse for any decline in my
performance that may occur, I want to be functioning as well as
possible...

Most people use artemisinin, but I'm not sure of the dose.
I tried quinine powder, and for some reason I sweat profusely when I take that one, and I'm not convinced it is a herx when it happens. I think artemisinin is preferred over quinine powder for the treatment of babs.
Just don't overdo it with the herbs. They can hit you like a truck.

One note of caution: I was told by my LLMD that "artemesinin as monotherapy does not work" ; ie, if you treat with artemesinin by itself, the babs will become resistant. I believe Dr Schaller mentions this in his book as well. How about cryptolepsis?

Artemesinin is controversial, and there are some types that are less toxic. It can cause permanent brain damage, so you should really be under the care of an LLMD for that one.
Check out Nutramedix Cumanda tinctures. They have a website online. It's part of the Cowden protocol which is used by some Lyme docs. I purchase my nutramedix from cheaper sources such as Renewal Enterprises, Green Pharmacy, etc. online.
I've been doing Cumanda/burbur for 2 1/2 months and have made modest progress. I had to go really slow because herxing is involved. Go slow, add 1 drop every 3 days to see how you react. It's supposed to treat lyme and its co infections including babesia.
I'll let you know in a few months if it really workds.

I used the Dr. Zhang Artemisiae formula with great success and know a few people who are on Artemisia or ARtemisinin by itself and it is workinG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are on the NutriCeuticals with Grapeseed Extract kind not the Dr. Zhnag kind!!! 2 local guys- both doing great-!!!!

Dr. Zhang's art is the most powerful form of art I have ever taken.
Although, this brand is more expensive, I would highly recommened it.

Our homeopath uses artemisinin, Prima Una De Gato, Allicidin and Neem Oil. Word to the wise, dilute the Neem Oil !!!!

I use Dr. Zhang's. My LLMD started me on Mepron/Biaxin when I was diagnosed, but since I was already taking the Artemisia I continued on with it. Normally he would have had me add it in after a month or so. So, it was a head start on the babs treatment.

My Lyme literate Dr. said the "best" thing for Babes is an artemesinin product called Hepalin.
He suggested I take 50 mg for two months then 100 mg (1 a day). It took about 6 months but the symptoms of alternate fever & chills, super sick feeling and extreme fatigue left.
That was ~2002. At the time I was also taking Zithromax (IV) and six weeks Flagyl (IV).
adamm, if you do try the produst I would appreciate knowing how you do.

What's this about Artemisia causing brain damage? Do the other antiprotozoals as well (Atovaquone, Quinine, etc.)?

There are a few members here who feel they have been harmed by arteminisin (myself included, though for me it was temporary). And there are others who felt it really helped. If you do try it for babesia, make sure to go really slow at first, i.e., low dose.
Also, did you not see Selma's thread recently on her babesia protocol? Search using the words "alternative" and "babesia" and choose the "topic only" selection. There might be something useful there.
