Hi, neighbor! (I'm from NW Colorado.)
I'll let some of the folks who understand antibiotic treatment answer your question....
I just wanted to say hello, and ask you if you found a good doctor up there somewhere (don't mention his/her name, of course. Send me a PM if you wish.)
Doctors (LLMDs) in this part of the country are hard to find so I'm always interested in learning who others are working with.
Welcome to the board, WYO!

John, tell us a little more about your "Lyme story', .... how long have you had Lyme, when were you diagnosed, etc.
Also, do you feel any difference on the mino, do you think you are having a herx since starting on the mino, etc.?

Oh, I see you started a new topic about 'herxing' - sorry didn't see that one.
Well, just nevermind my previous post then....

Hi John,
quote: I have been on mino for one week and wondering when I will start to noitce a change.
One week is a very short time in lyme treatment. Individual response to abx varies greatly. Some people (very few) don't herx and feel better right away however the majority of us herx to varying degrees depending on our bacterial load and our ability to detox the bug die-off and other factors such as co-infections, heavy metal load etc..
The length of time it takes to notice significant improvement can vary greatly since there can be many issues that complicate treatment. Because lyme disease treatment can be complex, it is important to see an LLMD (Lyme literate MD) if at all possible. It is so important that I get on an airplane and fly to see an LLMD. My insurance doesn't cover my doctor and we are not rich but we make the sacrifice. If not possible, you will need to read, read, read so that you understand all the pitfalls and can address any that might be stalling your improvement.
Untreated co-infections such as babesia, erlichia, bartonella etc. can stall or prevent improvement. The same situation can occur with heavy metal toxicity. Another problem occurs in some people (about 25% of the population) who have trouble getting rid of biotoxins. I seem to be one that needs help removing toxins and I take cholestyramine for biotoxins and a number of other supplements as well. If you can't get rid of the toxins created by borrelia, you will likely have little improvement until you take something to bind those toxins and remove them from your body.
I was on treatment for almost a year before starting treatment for babesia. I've seen some improvement with babesia treatment but I'm still pretty sick. I also have to deal with bartonella after we get the babesia. It is not uncommon for lyme patients to have several co-infections and if you've been sick for very long you may have picked up other infections along the way as a result of a depressed immune system.
It is very helpful to keep a diary of symptoms so that you can look back and see improvements AND it is useful for making treatment decisions as well. It's easy to forget minor improvements and encouraging to see that some symptoms are better or gone.
Reading the newbie links at the top of the medical forum is very helpful. Keep reading and learning. Herxing is no fun but it does let us know that we are on the right track. Hang in there, it will get better but it takes time.
Terry I'm not a doctor.

I was better but not all the way there after the first 6 months on IV. It really took another 2-3 years on orals to get to a point where I have a better quality of life. I have had lyme now for 21 years & 7 years before I got any treatment at all.
