A fellow lymie was infected in June, diagnosed in Sept,
began treatment and has recently developed
Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Now he's experiencing muscles tearing off at joints.

He explains it this way:

"I heard a tearing sound and a popping sound; my grandson
said oh oh grandpa. I tore the bicep muscle completely off the shoulder joint,
the bicep muscle also tore partially off at the elbow joint. The elbow
joint broke and the forearm muscle that rotates the wrist tore partially
off at the elbow."

Has anyone had this happen??

Thank you.

Mary

Please excuse my ignorance, but how does he know that the muscle tore? I've had muscles I thought were torn, but orthopaedic and primary care drs. are unable to diagnose it.

Thanks,
Kayda

It sounds painful, I sure hope he feels better soon.

Ouch.

I'd like to echo Kayda: how does he know he's tearing muscles? The muscles could be in spasm; they could be pulling joints out of place. I get both of those, and my chiropractor puts joints back in place(called extremities adjusting).

BTW, when the clindamycin antibiotic was working, for six months, I had no more muscle pain and spasm, and a lovely relief from popping joints.

Up for Mary - hoping you get some ideas.

I sure hope your friend wasn't a horse... cause you know what we'd have to do to him at this point. Oh NO!!

Actually... I was wondering if the person is on Cipro or Levequin? These drugs can sometimes affect tendons and make them rupture.

Also.. unless he was also in EXTREME pain it is hard to picture he just stood there while this happened.

Could the muscles be in a spasm and popping? The muscles doing that can cause joints to dislocate.

Hope whatever the cause and solution that there isn't any more pain involved!

He was in extreme pain when that happened and is now scheduled for surgery. I have no idea how that can be repaired.

He was on only Biaxin at the time, but I think he was on Flagyl prior to this happening. He does know about the dangers of certain abx causing muscle/tendon damage.

Here is another excerpt from an email he sent to me:

"The two doctors in Victoria who are trying to deal with the repairs to
the arm, tell me that for some unknown reason my white tissue (connective)
is strangely weakened. Weakened to the point where my muscles are stronger.
My muscles are quite literally pulling themselves off the bones. None of the
medications I am on are known to have such a side effect.
Although it may be a part of the rheumatoid arthritus, they are at a loss.
Have you ever come across such a thing before. The doctors wonder if it is
another symptom of LD. I contacted Dr M but he seemed as surprised as I was
when it first happened.

If you recall ever hearing of such a thing before with other Lymies I would
appreciate hearing about it. To many things have happened to me
in the last few months for me to ever accept that this is not LD related."

Any more ideas anyone?

Thank you,
Mary
