My doc said that it was, but my parents are missing

them on their nails too and neither of them have

TBI's. One does, however, have heart disease, and

both have mercury fillings. Is it just indicative

of chronic health problems in general?

I'm sure it means something, but I forget what. My moons are either gone or almost gone, too, and my heart was affected by this infection. I'm sure somebody here knows more.

I think it may be thyroid.

Here is a good site to check out, it is the 3rd section down, the MOONS section.

Interesting link.

I don't have moons, except on my thumbs. I just started Armour Thyroid last week because my thyroid was on the low end of normal and I had bad fatigue even though most of my Lyme symptoms are resolved -- except for brain fog and fatigue.

This is also talked about once in a while on glutenfreeforum.com.

I've read that this can be a sign of vitamin b deficiency but can't recall the source.

interesting. i also don't have moons, except on my thumbs. the thyroid test my LLMD did came back normal, though.

another fingernail question: anyone know what white spots on the nails signify?

I think white spots are zinc deficiency.

I think, check it out. L)

My thryoid test was normal, too, but the low end of normal. He did some further testing, which was also low end of normal. I've been on Armour for three days and already feel better.

Google Broda Barnes to learn a lot more about thyroid. [Smile]

I used to get white spots ... I can't remember what they're from, but I don't get them anymore ... could it be iron? food intolerances? I don't know.

hi sixgoofykids,

if anything, i expected my thyroid to be overactive. i'm still not totally convinced it's not.

can i ask, what further thyroid tests did your LLMD do?

thanks.

I wonder if there's a nutritional connection?
But the presence of these marks probably means more in some people than others; there's probably a hereditary component.
I never noticed if my "moons" faded when I was really sick, but they seem to be back now, if so.

Okay dont laugh TOO hard but I just checked my 'moons'. Barely,,,just barely have them on both pinkies. So small can barely see them,,,otherwise the rest of them are A-OK.

I get those purple spots on MY finger nails and I KNOW why!!

Docs DO look at your nails for some reason but forgot why!!

MY toe nails are a "MESS". One is split lengthwise,,,was told it will always be that way!!

before I KNEW what I had,,,one guy suggested that his wife had similiar sxs and cured herself with a pack of gelatin mix in a short shot of orange juice.(Every day,,or twice a day) Didnt fix me but did have better nails!!

Course I am "OLD" and "WEIRD" being --just don--

I've always heard it's just a general sign of illness.

Heiwalove, I'll have to look it up and get back to you. It was some kind of test that tested T3 and T4, but I can't remember the specifics. It was also in the low-normal range on this test.

I have trouble keeping my weight up, so I'm not your typical low-thyroid ... except for the low energy level and lowish basal temperatures.

definitely vitamin B12 deficiency.

trish, excellent link! interesting; please copy and paste it to TREEPATROL'S NEWBIE LINKS asking him to add next time he updates UNLESS it is there already!

when i have complete physical exams, my docs always look at them commenting if there are half moons, etc., and it is NOTED IN MEDICAL NOTES!]

i don't have any now; i keep my nails super short....my OCD thing! can't stand any length on my mails! [Frown]

I alsolost my fingernail moons - they are only on my thumbs, although there small ones recently appeared on my index fingers.

I used to have gorgeous moons before getting Lyme.I also had strong nails, pre-Lyme.

B-12 Thumb moons are the last to go. It's taken me 4 yrs of B-12 sublingual to get moons back on my fingers. I don't think the pinkie has a moon?

I started out doing 500mcg under the tongue for probably three yrs. Found out the more deficient you are you need more like 1000-2000 mcg a day.

I just started doing 3000 a couple weeks ago and it does help with fatigue. It's a slow process.

Do a search on medical and you will see many posts about moons and B-12.

except for my thumbs, I'm moon-less too.

anyone know the most effective form of B12?
oral, sublingual, injections ?

thanks [Smile]

I've heard it was zinc deficiency. I guess now we need experimenters to do VitB12 or zinc, etc and report back...

I was told in the past that the white spots are possibly a zinc deficiency. a quick search online gave the same info.

and it seems that the disappearance of moons may have more to do with underactive thyroid/low metabolism than b12. Darker nails are associated with B12 deficiency though.

not sure which of this info is trustworthy though. I'll check with my dr next appt.

Many references to B-12 & moons. B-12 is a benefit to many sx that TBD patients experience.
I've never done the shots of 12, don't like needles. Sublingual B-12 is as good as injected.

Read this site.
