Peripheral Iv versus PICC line,

I am so confused. [bonk]
Just had first LLMD appt with Dr. C. Going to do Rocephin. The office said to do Periperal. One health agnecy said probably won't find a agency to work with me on a peripheral.

I liked the idea that I would be on Rocephin by Peripheral for 4 days then I would be off Iv for 3.

going thru divorce losing insurance in January so need some answer fast.

Is a PICC line easy to get ride of??

Risk of infections same ??

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Yes I have had both. The PICC line is more difficult to maintain-need weekly dressing changes and must take special precautions when showering. An infection through a PICC line is life threatening.

The peripheral line is less risky but needs to be changed often although I had one in once for two months. It is still possible to get an infection in it but not likely. Also it gives you the freedom to do things with your arm on the days you don't have it. The down side is getting stuck constantly and if it malfunctions you must get a nurse to insert a new one so you don't disrupt your medication schedule.

Hope this helps!

I did two months of peripherals because LLMD was so cautious about picc.

I remember them as painful. Often had to be at my wrist.

Finaly switched to picc-which I had for another 6 months-it was a breeze for me. No problems-except allergy to dressing, which was switched to different brand.

Same infusion company handled both .

Given a choice- I would chose a picc over peripherals.
