I just read that if you have Lupus antibiotics will cause a flare!
Is there anyone here with Lupus that can confirm?
If true, that is a scary thought, someone who thought they had LD and were just herxing could have Lupus and be flaring??
Anyone know if there is any truth to this?

Alternatively, people diagnosed with Lupus who have a flare up from antibiotics were misdiagnosed in the first place, and do in fact have Lyme disease.
Some antibiotics, like doxy, have anti-inflametory properties, and therefore should make people with auto-immune diseases feel better.
The reason why Lyme patients has a flare up with antibiotics is because of mass die-off of bacteria.

Is there someone you know who has a dx of lupus who has just been put on abx ?
Or is this a theoritical question?
As mentioned above, it happens that lupus can be misdiagnosed and if that person is give abx there may a herx that would have others think "flare" -
I have read that alfalfa powder or tablets and also minocycline can cause a lupus flare. Again, definition is everything.
It can all be very complex. So, if this question is for someone you know, I hope they can see a LLMD who would also know about lupus and how to be certain of diagnosis. In addition many lupus patients are prescribed steroids which can be very dangerous in lyme disease or other infections as well.
Sometimes lupus can be undiagnosed lyme. But -and I'm assuming here - that may NOT always be the case. So, again, if this is someone you know, I just hope they have the very best diagnostician.

No, no one I know has Lupus. I am in constant and continual study for articles for my website and came across this during study.
It seemed very strange and my hope is that all patients with LD have ruled out Lupus after reading this.
Obviously if Lupus has not been ruled out some who believe they have LD could really have Lupus and be assuming the "flare" is a herx.
Corticosteroids destroyed me after a misdiagnosis for a pulled muscle (story at link below) and since then have been on a mission to make sure that anyone who even suspects LD stays far, far away from them.
Thanks.

I think this important for anyone with Lyme, if they have not already (which I am sure most of us has) to have Lupus ruled out, as using the tetracyclines could be misconstrued as a herx. Isn't that ironic, one of the most frequently used drugs for LD of course.
Interestingly 2 tests were run on me by an ILADS LLMD to rule it out when I first met him - even with a positive LD test. I think that was smart to cover all bases of any disease with similar syptoms. He told me some people have both.
