I have a groshong catheter and have all along been using a heparin flush 10 units 5 ml fill.

Ran out and ordered the same but pharmacist called and got in a 100 unit 5ml fill. He did not see a big difference and said they should be fine.

Is anyone else using 100 unit heparin instead of 10??

My home health nurse didn't think it was a big deal either.

Hi,

I take 10,000 units of heparin a day, not a big deal, so I wouldn't think 100 units would cause any problems. Heparin has a very short life and is completely gone in a few hours, that is why it is given 2-3 times a day usually.

I also have a groshong PICC... I flush with 10 units 5 ml... Groshong actually says dont flush with heprin at all... The catheter was made so you dont have to flush with heprin but my nurse told me to do it anyway.. So I do.. If you want only flush half of whats in the vial and throw the rest out.. How long have you had your Groshong?? A little advice about the groshong picc... Dont let your nurse draw blood from the line.. For some reason with the groshongs you can clot easily if blood is drawn from the line.. and also becareful with the catheter on the outside of your arm.. its very sensitive.. I have already had 2 holes in it.. but my is in a bad spot on my arm.. mine is on my forearm right below the bed of my arm... The worst spot.. One more thing dont use the blue clamp.. that comes on the extension with the groshong... Of course this is all if you have a PICC and not another catheter...
