Was reading Craig's post and saw several of you mention Biaxin in combo with Doxy working well.
I've been on Doxy (100mg 2x day) about 3 months now for neuro Lyme (numbness, vibrations, typing dyslexia, ear buzzing, etc). While I'm improving some things still come back (today top of my nose is numbish, for example).
My ear still has a buzz that I can hear at night and my ears in general still crackle.
While I'm glad that the Doxy is helping I'm wondering if another drug like Biaxin might help push me over to a more full recovery?
Did anyone have good luck with Doxy/Biaxin combo helping neuro Lyme stuff?
I still see my regular MD because he's been supportive of my treatment - if I suggested another abx I'm sure he would let me try it.
Appreciate any advice!

I have been on Biaxin and Plaquenil since July and I have been noticing a good staedy improvement.
I seem to hit a plateau so my doc added on 100 mg Doxy 2 times a day.
It has been a little hard on my stomach, but so far so good.
It has only been 4 weeks.
Good Luck! Melissa

First make sure you're not taking any of the following:
What drug(s) may interact with clarithromycin? (Back to top) *astemizole *birth control pills *carbamazepine *cisapride *colchicine *digoxin *dofetilide *doxercalciferol *ergot alkaloid medicines, like ergotamine *other antibiotics, like grepafloxacin or sparfloxacin *paricalcitol *pimozide *ritonavir *some 'statin' medicines for reducing cholesterol (examples: atorvastatin, lovastatin, simvastatin) *terfenadine *theophylline *triazolam *warfarin *zidovudine
You may also want to check out www.drugdigest.com for more information. I think Biaxin can also interfere with SSRI's.
Otherwise, it was a great drug for me!

I was on Biaxin for a long time and it did a good job.
I was also on Doxy, but 200 mg. twice daily.
Have you looked at the Dr. B guidelines? They have a lot of good info regarding meds.

its where I got my name from. Never really helped long term though.

I had a bad experience with Biaxin, one of my major Lyme symptoms is severe dizziness and imbalance, and Biaxin aggravated these symptoms so much I had to discontinue it. I later found out that the medication can have ototoxic effects in some people, it seems I'm one of the unlucky ones.

Another caveat would be that there is some evidence that drugs in the *mycin family can interfere with the metabolism of benzodiazapine type drugs (temazepam, lorazepam, some sleep aids like Ambien etc.) so if one has been taking those long term (not a great idea, but sometimes happens) there could be problems. From personal experience, I had severe insomnia while on the drug that benzodiazapines didn't help much, but I can't say for sure if that was because of a direct effect of the Biaxin or secondary to the ototoxic effects I experienced.

I asked this in a new topic, but I'll ask it on this thread as well...I keep reading where it takes 400 mg. of Doryx to kill spirochetes, but my NP only prescribed 300 mg along with the Biaxin [1000mg per day].
I hope I'm not undertreating, but that's all she would prescribe. I've also had one person tell me that as a rule, it's 100 mg. per 50 lbs. of weight.
Since I'm only 155, it would seem about right then, to only take 300 mg. Which is correct?

300 mg of doxy and 1,000 mg biaxin sounds like a good amount of antibiotics. I was under the impression that doxy and biaxin are not a great combo for going after the different forms of Lyme germs, but I could be wrong.
For very good drug information go to www.ILADS.org, click "Treatment Guidelines," click Dr. Burrascano's 33 pages of tips for 2005.

Craig: I think 300 is the minimum. My sister is also on that dose. I'm pretty sure the range is from 300 to 600 per day but haven't read the guides in a while.
