I had the same problem. The only thing that has helped me (and I tried MANY things) is to take a good Magnesium supplement everyday. I take Source Naturals Ultra-Mag.

i already take a good mag supplement....any other recommendations?

Increase your magnesium supplement.

When it is too much.....You will get the oppositie of constipation.

Hugs,

Geneal

Lots of pro biotics!!!!!!!

If you dont know what they are please do a search. At this point any will do. They are needed in your gut to keep you moving.

I like magnessium oxide too. Its in milk of magnesia

the one thing i have found helpful is an herbal tea. The brand name is "Traditional Medicinals" and it is the Laxative tea. It has 1000 mgs senokot and some other things to help constipation. But you have to make sure not to take any medication for 2 hours before or after the tea because it can interfere with absorption of the medication.

It is really the only thing I have found helpful.

Sammy, if you want something natural, you might try aloe vera juice - I buy George's Aloe Vera juice and it tastes just like water. It might be worth buying a quart to see. I would guess that 1/4 cup once or twice a day might make a big difference for you. Aloe can be very soothing and healing to the GI tract anyway....

Diet, Diet, Diet:

No white bread- try only whole grains.
No white rice.

Lots of fresh vegetables, raw if possible.
Lots of fresh fruit (not bananas which are binding). Prunes and apples are great.

Lots of water.

My dd had major constipation (don't know if it was lyme related), but changing her diet REALLY helped.

DITTO!!! But go easy on the fruit if you're prone to yeast. [and you will be if you're on abx long enough]

Lots of water and maybe some vitamin C if you can tolerate it.

Take a good quality probiotic!!!

Large doses of Vitamin C will also help.

Hi - another answer: mangosteen juice. When I started it, it cleaned out my intestines for three days, and keeps me regular like a baby. I drink the Ultra mnangosteen version. If you try it, drink a lot of water with it and go slow. It can be powerful.

Magnesium added just dont take within 3 hrs of abx's

Magnesium will pull water to your intestines.
Milk of magnesia or magnesium citric
also good probiotics.

You can use Miralax to get things moving when you're desperate for relief. It's the stuff you take before having a colonoscopy.

My daughter's digestive system stopped working and she was constipated for over 6 weeks. She was hospitalized and had to drink one cup every 15 minutes until the obstruction passed...or the gallon was gone.

This is a powder you mix with water. Some containers have a flavor packet with it. It tastes nasty either way.

This was a terrible, painful way to get cleaned out, but it worked. I'd have rather seen her have triplets than go through that.

The procedure cleaned her out, but it didn't correct the underlying problem.

Have you read Dr. VTS's article about "Bells Palsy of the Gut...". It's a must read!

Lyme can affect any nerve. The nerves supplying the digestive system can be affected, leading to poor digestion and result in constipation or diarrhea.

Constipation can be from the nerves not working enough and diarrhea from the nerves being over stimulated. That's why you can see either extreme in Lyme patients.

Also, some Lyme patients have to rely on narcotics to help them manage their pain. Narcotics are constipating.

Now my daughter uses Miralax when she feels likes her guts are sluggish.

Hello [Smile]

Yep, it's a problem for me too and I go from one extreme to the other all the time.

Getting ready for a BIG diet change soon now. Right after I finish my jelly bellies! I mean cmon now, at least let me say my last goodbye to my delicious jelly bellies! [Big Grin]

What about the sugar content of activia? I've steared clear of it for that reason....???

Try SMOOTH MOVE tea by Traditional Medicinals. You can find it at all health food stores and and most grocery stores.

Drink it at night before bed. It works the next day 99% of the time for me.

I'd do a good probiotic and plain, sugar free yogurt rather than Activia.
