I am in absolute shock...PCP's office called this morning to say my $48 worth of medical records were ready.

I have been a patient here for 13 years, but none of these records are for anything Lyme related, except the office visit when I had the rash after the tick bite.

...back then I never went to the doctor unless something serious was going on.

Where should I complain about this fee?

I guess every doctor may have the right to set their own policies? Sorry I don't know more about this, but wanted to share the policy a hospital told me about my recent request.

They said that medical records for my personal use were $1 per page, then prorated at less per page for larger orders.

If the records were for a doctor they were no charge. We requested them to hand carry to another doctor out of state for a second opinion. Guess we were lucky the lady at the dest at the time did not charge us.

I always thought that if you were still a patient most doctor's offices would give them to you as a courtesy. But charge if you were leaving as a patient...

We also just requested records that I had gotten from a neurologist last year and misplaced. Because these records are over a year old and now stored off site, actually out of state, the copies came with a bill! $1 per page!

Sorry not very helpful! Good luck!

$5.00 base fee
$1.00 per page up to 25 pages
$0.50 for each additional page

I found 27 pages of notes from 2 ER visits that I had given the PCP...deduct those and the bill was still $35.00.

...still seems high, but they did copy it for me in less than 24 hours and I am very thankful for that.

As MommaK said, this is a great reminder to pick up the office notes at each visit when there is no fee and they already have your record in hand.

nancy, i agree with you; expensive!!

our local clinic, i sign a notice of release and their fee is $15.00 flat for ENTIRE YEAR OF NOTES.

when i've gotten my hospital records, it is a flat fee of $20 or less if NOT many pages.

yes, i get my notes after each visit and have a special calendar to note EACH drs. was recd. and WHEN! it's a pain, but much needed...

glad you got the notes. [group hug] [kiss]
