I know, I know, I'm already sick. I'm fighting a re-occurrence after 5 relatively symptom free years.
I'm on cefuroxime while waiting for my insurance co to approve IV Roceph.
They turned down first request, doc is appealing. I started with 4 weeks of doxy, I've been on the cefuroxime for 3.
My question is this. What happens if I become ill with something that would requre an antibiotic? Like strep, or bronchitis? I ask because I've just spent three days with the flu. High fever, aches, chills, now sniffles and bad cough.
I'm sure this is a stupid question, but I can't help but wonder.

Sometimes if you have another bacterial infection requiring a different antibiotic you can take both... or stop one and take the other... then resume. It is up to your doctor.
Several options if that hapens... not one answer fits all... sorry.
Feel better soon!

Hi Barbrann!! Welcome back...but sorry you are ill again....bummer!!
As Tinny said, it shouldn't be a problem if you get strep or something. They just change abx if the one you're on doesn't work for that.

The flu is generally viral so abx don't help. Just bed rest & lots of fluids...
If the flu becomes bacterial - abx may help. I was actually taking abx & I got a bad chesty cold.
The abx I was taking for Lyme cleared it up.
You can tell if your flu goes bacterial if your mucus becomes yellow as opposed to being clear.
Abx are prescribed for alot of things that don't really require them. It's probably best to avoid using them if possible.
I guess this is why I don't want to take them on an open ended basis.
Bacteria can build resistance if you take them all the time.

I got sick with the flu and sinus infection a few times over the winter whilst on doxy for my lyme. I would just switch to amoxocillin for a week or so and that cleared things up for me. And of course loads of bed rest and ginger and lemon tea.

Hello everyone, thank you so much for your kind replies. I just got back from my doc (hubby made me go).
He ordered a chest xray, is a little concerned about pneumonia. He put me on zith, in addition to the cef.
I guess it wasn't a silly question after all. I'm wiped out, going to take a snooooozzze.
