My dh just started flagyl. What do I need to know?
I just did a search on it and read something about neuropathy? What is that? Thanks!

Flagyl is awesome. What else are you taking with it and what doses? Peripheral neuropathy can happen in some cases, if you start noticing tingling of your extremities call your LLMD.
Flagyl can cause strong herxing and that's exactly what it is supposed to do. Flagyl targets the cyst form of Lyme. You need to have other antibiotics in your blood to kill the intact spirochetes that swim out of the cysts! You have to target all forms of the Lyme.

Our doc has only been prescribing one abx at a time in addition to other supplements. DH is herxing - immediately, but not bad. What abx have others paired up with flagyl? We have an appt coming up and I'm making a list of stuff to ask about.

I'm on Flagyl, Cefuroxime, and Azithromycin.
I've seen Flagyl paired with basically any macrolide being a good combo. Flagyl is not an abx that should be taken by itself for Lyme.
Next time I see my LLMD I'm going to begin treatment with Rifampin, Biaxin and Flagyl.

One antibiotic at a time? Bizarre.
I took 3,000 mg Ceftin, 2,000 mg Biaxin, 1.2 MU Bicillin LA 3x per week and Flagyl 500 mg 4x per day
Also IV Zithromax 1,000 mg and IV Flagyl, oral Zithro 1,200 mg/day and oral Flagyl 750 mg 4x per day and Bicillin 1.2 MU 3x per week
Lots of other combos too... you have to target all forms of the Lyme.

I found the flagyl er easier to take. One pill in the morning.
That beats 3 250mg pills during the day.
Really bad headaches with it.
When I was on 3, it gave me insomnia.
The ER is more expensive, but in my opinion, worth it.
I pulsed it on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Hugs,
Geneal

Flagyl CAN cause neuropathy....so be aware of that serious side effect.
For me, the worst thing about flagyl was the resulting depression it caused! AWFUL!!
It can also cause intense herxing. Be forewarned!
Other than that, it's a great drug for attacking the cyst from ... something you MUST do in order to get well!

Is the neuropathy permanent, or does it reverse once you've stopped taking it? I'm just curious, since my new LLMD might decide to give that one a try.

Uh oh! I just posted about this sensation of pins being stabbed into my skin. I started Flagyl a week ago and now I'm wondering if this is some kind of neuropathy. The pin thing started a few days ago. Help!

I am on biaxon and flagyl, 3 weeks on biaxon and one week on flagyl.I have been doing this since the beginning of July.
The flagyl has really been the hardest for me to handle. It gives me these horrible headaches and GI problems and I am an emotional wreck on it with lots of tears.
But, it is really is wonderful for killing the cystic cell phase of lyme. I am suppose to give my body a rest for a month but it's like a catch 22, either suck it up and deal with the side affects or let those cysts live with out being killed. I just don't want to let them survive for that month.

oooppss sorry, I hit add reply by accident. With taking Flagyl I usually will get a slight headache by day 2 but as the days go on my headaches become very hard to handle. I have also noticed that they last about 3 days after stopping. This didn't start right away it took a few months for my headaches on Flagyl to become overwhelming.
I do know that it is important to be on 2 different abx's to hit the lyme in different forms. The little buggers are tricky. Oh also, do not have any thing with alcohol in it. Because any kind of alcohol will make you very sick to your stomach,we don't need that too!
take care and I wish you lots of luck!

The neuropathy can become permanent. I'm not sure at what point you should stop the med if that happens.
You could try its close cousin, Tinidazole. It usually is easier on the body.

The pre-existing neuropathy in my arms got worse on Flagyl and it also gave me bad headaches. I will definitely not take it again, since neuropathic pain is already my main symptom.
