Studying the two, I cannot find any difference in Mino vs Doxy EXCEPT that Mino may be stronger, therefore less pills are necessary. They both seem to kill the exact same things according to the inserts.
My son does well on Doxy, on Mino has much confusion...this is listed as a side effect, but with LD who knows if it is herx or side effect?
He'd like to go back on Doxy, but is afraid it won't have the impact of Mino...yet Mino he says makes him feel like he is going crazy.
Opinions please!!!

For ME:
Mino is KINDER. Wicked at first but then, kinder.
My stomach prefers it, for certain.
I can take it for maintenance without blinking.
No evil sunburn or evil belly-protestations.
Though truthfully, due to its kindness, I have to doubt that it packs the same punch as doxy.
In other words, for a person with NEWLY acquired lyme, I would never tell them to go take mino.
It would be mop-up, or maintenance only.
It's good stuff, but couldn't really take the place of doxy. Sad to say...
Just my opinion, a'course.

I was just switched from mino to doxy. The herx from the doxy has been horrible, so they must not be exactly the same.
I hear that the mino crosses into the brain better.

Good thread. My daughter has been on six months of mino. Needed to take a break due to intense spine pain.
She just started it up again because some old bart symptoms were coming back.
It's been hard. Would like to try doxy.

I just made a thread about this. Doxy gave me a herx in the beginning, but Mino knocked me out. All my symptoms increased 10 times and now I also have imbalance problems and low fever. It does says that mino has twice the CNS penetration of doxy so it must be stirring things up in there much more then doxy ever did for me.

I agree with some of the other posters. I started on doxy, did a month and was feeling great (after a herx, of course). I was switched to mino due to sunburn. The herx was HORRIBLE on the mino and it took two weeks for the dizzyness to subside.
I do not feel that I am making as much progress as I was on the doxy, but, if it crosses the BBB and gets into the CNS better than doxy, I'll stick with it.
I have a Dr appt coming up. My next option is bicillin injections. ouch...

He started at 200mg out of the gate, and has made it one week, now the "going crazy" feeling especially at night has started. I couldn't last on Doxy because it did the same thing to me. He is chronic and Doxy "cured" him once before in 2 months, but he quit too soon and within a few months relapsed.
The tetra's are good for CNS penetration..but according to my LLMD, he laughs and says, "All abx cross the BBB it is the most common question I get, some more than others".
I think I will have him back down to 100mg per day - and ramp back up, it seems like a rough one. He actually thinks Mino is harder than Flagyl...he has done both.
blinkie Bicillin isn't so bad, I do the shots myself, don't even numb it or anything, but I do put heat on after for a few minutes that relieves pain quickly. Bicillin, I can feel in my brain...I never have had brain fog, word searching or disconnected feelings until Bicillin, so I am sure it kills in the CNS, don't worry not so bad. Ok back to Doxy and Mino..he did really well on Doxy, so well he was afraid it wasn't doing any good. Mino has been a different experience.
Kelmo - Don't want to scare you, but make you aware for females Mino can have side effects of headache, dizziness and spinal pain that should never be ignored, this can mean cerebral spinal fluid build up. A woman (at my forum) daughter nearly lost her sight. Started w/ headaches, then she woke up blind and of course was rushed to the hospital where it was touch and go, they had to remove spinal fluid over and over again because her brain kept swelling, spinal fluid just kept building. Wikipedia, mentions this horrendous side effect and also at drugs.com..so if your daughter is having brain or spinal problems notify your LLMD and let him know, this can be dangerous...like I said especially for females. It was horrible waiting and wondering if her daughter would regain her sight and be ok, but she had some great doctors.
Scares me away now for sure!

minocycline is ototoxic (toxic to the ears) - in addition to tinnitus it can cause balance problems due to the vestibular reactions, too.
Some people seem to do well but if that is not the case, don't try to push it. Ears are very important.
NAC or B6 may help keep the ears a bit safer if mino is used, but that is being studied still. A timed released version of mino (minocin) may be better for the ears, but just speculation about that on my part.
It also may have to do with how well each person filters through toxins in general. Much to learn in this area.
