Well, my 3 year old son ended up with a severe allergic reaction to the amoxicillin. He started with hives on his feet which soon spread all over. His feet swelled up, as well as his hands and eye lids. His feet were starting to bruise. All this happened one week after starting the medication and progressed quickly! We had to stop the medication immediately. I took him to the ER. It took two doctors awhile to research what to do for him w/ the Lyme as a result of this allergic reaction. They came up with cefuroxime. The scrpt says: cefuroxime 175 mg (125 mg/ 5ml). Sig: 7 ml (30 bill) x 21 days. Disp one bottle. He was on the amox for one week, so this will make 4 weeks total of antibiotics. I asked the ER doctor if he should take it longer and he said 3-4 weeks is the recommended time. Someone sent me a llmd in Albany, and I plan to call Monday and see if they see pediatric cases of Lyme. I hope so! I am so scared. Why did he have to end up allergic to amox.? [Frown] Just our luck. Anyone have any input on the effectiveness of cefuroxime for lyme? is it as good as amox.? I have to do more research now. Thanks.

When I did a little bit of research on this I found that yes children who are allergic to amoxicillin are treated with ceftin for lyme.

Have you been referred to Dr. J in Hyde Park, NY? He's the foremost lyme pediatrician and this is who you would really want to see.

So sorry to hear about your little guy--I hope the ceftin will do the trick.

Dr. J is in CT, not Hyde Park. [Smile]
