My LLMD is a big advocate of colloidal silver and some people have claimed to have been "cured" by it. I personally believe that antibiotics are necessary to knock down the numbers but you could try this first and see how it goes:

Antibiotics do not work for everyone, but they are far and away the most effective means of treating Lyme. They achieve remission or substantial improvment in about 80% of the cases.
Lymenet is dominated by posters for whom the ABX have not worked (part of the 20%), and so presents a distorted view of successful Lyme treatment.

You also have to realize that there are lots of people on here (lymenet) who are posting looking for advice, support, info., etc. while they are going through their treatment.
We are here because we need to be, hopefully it does not mean that we will need to be here forever. I am sure there are lots of old timers who just like helping people, doesn't mean they aren't well.
I am not saying that abx. are definitely the answer (I am not "cured" yet and have been on them for 14 months), but you may be getting a distorted view from here.

Pat, have you tried the "Search" function?
Just for fun, I typed the word "Cowden" into the Search function, and clicked on 'subject only' so it would search only the subject line of posts and not the entire thread. Try that -- you'll be reading for the rest of the day. Try the same thing only substitute the word 'Buhner.' (Leave out the quotes when you search.)
It's probably true to say the majority of lyme patients are using antibiotics because they have the best track record of killing the bacteria that cause lyme disease. Also, most LLMD's prescribe antibiotics as part of their treatment regimen. The ILADS practice guidelines call for it.
There are practitioners who use alternative medicines. Hopefully you can find someone knowledgeable to help you. If you are not treating at all right now, maybe starting treatment would reduce your pain. Maybe you could post in "Seeking a Doctor" and ask for a referral to a naturopathic doctor in your area?

I've known people who have recovered with both.
There are so many intangibles we're dealing with
here-- you just have to see what works for you.

Here is a link to a very good article about Lyme Disease written by an herbalist. Lists some of the herbs which can be used for various Lyme symptoms.
Hubby sees this herbalist. Takes both herbs and antibiotics.
Most LLMD's do not prescribe narcotic painkillers. They usually refer patients to a pain specialist.
What type of pain do you have -- joint pain or headaches or back pain etc ? Different types of pain respond to different meds and supplements.

Antibiotics are usually the best first thing to try. One reason being it is likely the only treatment a doctor is familiar with. They also help quite often. Most people posting here are not having typical results, so do not use it as a measurement of effectiveness.
If you have to do it alone, without a physicians direction, then you will have to consider alternative methods since pharmaceutical antibiotics are not going to be an option.

Keep in mind that the antibiotic regimen being used by LLMD's is not "traditional." Any lyme treatment that is working for long term lyme is alternative to the point that some practitioners are losing their licenses over it. Most people who are having success are using antibiotics plus complementary treatments. Most good Lyme doctors use both.
