My Rheumy put me on Doxycycline for Lyme and long story short I became very ill.
I called June 9th to let them know how sick I was and told them I stopped taking the medicine. I never got a return phone call until today.
Now, the doctor is really concerned (yeah, ok) and wants me to take Amoxicillin for one month. The doxy was supposed to be taken for 3 weeks.
So, just wondering how many of you have been treated with Amoxicillin and how did your body react to this drug?
I am so scared because the Doxy made me so sick and crippled me for days with pain that raged through out my body.
Thanks for any insight you can throw my way.
I am scheduled to see a Infectious disease doctor July 2nd or 3rd....cant remember right now. I set up with the ID doctor because the Rheumy never called me back. Posted by Hoosiers51 (Member # 15759) on :

Best of luck, and don't be afraid of what we call "Herx"'s.....it is when you feel sick while the bugs are dying off, so even though you feel sick, it means your meds are working.
A lot of people experience this and it is normal.
Keep that in mind.

I was on high dosed amoxicillin 7.5 grams (15 pills) for 2 months. Amoxicillin works but its gotta be in high doses to get to the brain.

The doxy was WORKING!!! That is what happens when someone with Lyme goes on abx!
I took amoxy at 7500 mg. per day for 5 months. I took it with many other meds, including probenecid which keeps it in your bloodstream longer.
You need to give up on the mainstream docs and see an LLMD.

I am going to see a LLMD but not until I get back from my vacation. I go to France July 14th and do not want to be sick in Europe.
Once I return I will be getting busy with a LLMD.

Trish and others are correct.
The doxy probably WAS working -- it's supposed to make you feel terrible -- that's a sign it's working!! :-)
Amoxicillin will work also. I was on it for several months at 3000 mg a day along with Probenecid 1500 mg a day (increases blood levels). It penetrates the blood-brain barrier if infection is present.
However, it'd be a good idea to hunt down an LLMD in any case. Your ID doc is unlikely to test you for co-infections, such as babesia, bartonella, etc., and you won't recover from lyme if you happen to have these.
If you have a read on the ILADS Guidelines (see the Newbie Links above) you'll see Amoxy right on there as recommended. So it's good stuff.
Don't stop treating till you're well. You gotta go through it to go through it! Come here often!

I am sooooo mad.
I just got a call that I can not take Amoxicillin because I am allergic to Pennicillin.
This Rheumatologist is trying his best to kill me.
I think I am washing my hands of this idiot. Posted by groovy2 (Member # 6304) on :
Hi Karol
I agree with the what the other above have said- Herx-
Starting and stopping ABX is Not Good- Doing this will make the germs become resistant to the ABX -
Doxi is the Usual choice to start treatment-
Getting well again is not easy nor fun - You Will most likely get sicker for awhile-
Its the No pain No gain type problem for most people - Jay -

sounds like a herx to me.
but maybe you might want to find another doctor. sounds like you don't have faith in this one.

Chances are you would have felt just as bad on the amoxy as you did on the doxy. Either would cause a herx and make you feel bad.

I know now that I have no faith in this doctor.
He prescribed Amoxicillin when I am allergic to Penicillin..................IDIOT!!!
I am done dealing with this office.
I will seek out a LLMD once I get back from vacation July 23rd.
In the meantime I am seeing a Infectious disease guy next week. I know he has to be better then this Rheumy who gave me medicine that could have killed me.
