I just got my CD57 result from Labcorp and the result is 837. The reference range was 60-360.
Why is my CD57 so high ? What does it indicate?
I am being treated with Lyme, Babesiosis. I started treatment couple months back with Doxycycline + Biaxin + Mepron.

Wow, I've never heard of one being that high before.
All I've read is that when a CD57 is that high, it could indicate a co-infection is very active...
But, of course, who knows really. What has your LLMD said about it? I would be interested in what s/he has to say about it.

Very weird. This is why I say it's not a very good test. The results are just not consistent.

Doctors I have seen discussing this suggest that very high numbers can also be TBDs and that with treatment, it normalizes. May be related to the quality vs. quantity of the cells in that the quantity is not very good so the body attempts to compensate. I agree though with other posters that this test is sometimes hard to know what to do with. I continue to get it done from time to time but don't let it dictate my treatment.

This book has a section on CD-57. It looks as though it may be increased following infection with CMV virus (but it says in transplant patients) although I think the lyme CD-57 test measures a more specific branch of the antigen...someone help me out there...
Gvm, how long have you been sick and did you have a positive WB?

Please have the test run again. CD57 that high is way beyond the threshold of even normal, healthy people. There's a chance the test was messed up, and that is a very very questionable result.
Many under treatment for lyme have extremely low CD57s. Those with co-infections and even normal healthy people tend to range from 120-300. A test of that magnitude was once thought to be a risk factor for a number of conditions, but I'll have to see what the current theory happens to be.

It is most likely high due to strep infection, alot if not most lyme patients have strep infections and this will cause th CD-57 to score high like that, it happened to me

At a Lyme support group, a patient/nurse was giving a recap of the ILADS/LDA conference she had attended - this was the 2007 one. I thought she had said that CD57 over 300 may indicate that Lyme has gone autoimmune.
I will email her and see if she can find her notes, then let you know.
However it might be worth contacting the famous LLMD who discovered the CD57/Lyme link, faxing your results, and asking his opinion if he's ever run across this or if it's likely a lab error.

I just checked with the person who had been recapping the ILADS and LDA 2006 conference for one of our support groups, and asked about the high CD57 score because I thought she had been the one who reported a discussion about high scores and auto-immunity.
She told me there haven't been many discussions lately, not a lot of consensus.
So I guess it's worth doing what others have posted and having the test repeated.
I know I have had lab errors with other tests in the past.

I found this info posted on another forum. I hate to post this, but you may want to print the page at the link & bring it to your LLMD & Get your CD4 checked.
I've heard Lyme-Disease Complex referred to as "AIDS-lite" because of what it does to the immune system. I don't know what ARC is or what the "related symptoms" are.
Hopefully your Dr. can determine whether this is actually significant.
The CD57 antigen is present on 15% to 20% of normal peripheral blood mononuclear cells. The CD57 antigen is expressed on a subset of natural killer (NK) lymphocytes and a subset of T-lymphocytes, and on central and peripheral nervous tissue.
The CD8 (Leu-2a) antigen is present on the human suppressor/cytotoxic T-lymphocyte subset as well as on a subset of NK lymphocytes. The CD8 antigen is expressed on 19% to 48% of normal peripheral blood lymphocytes and the majority of normal thymocytes.
CD8+CD57+ cells: In the presence of decreased levels of CD4+ cells, elevation of the CD8+CD57+ subpopulation has been associated with a combination of pre-AIDS symptoms known as AIDS-related complex (ARC).

I have not had a CD57 test and I keep reading posts and am confused. Some say they have very High Results and some say they have very low results and some are working making theirs go UP and some on lowering them to a range of like 120 to 200??? Is this correct and why?? I am bit lost on this test issue.
