I took it for a couple of weeks and it didn't work. I'm wondering if it's the kind of medication where it is supposed to act asap or if it takes weeks/months to build up and start working?

Wayyyyy back when....the first neurologist I saw told me that it was the type of medication that
is supposed to work right away at a low dose and then ramped up to hit a level that is beneficial to the patient with pain.
It is an anti-seizure medication that they tried using on me for the transient pain of LD
especially in my lower extremities....
It did'nt work at all so he moved on to another type...which also did'nt work...
It took many years until I finally got something to work...a pain pill....Gee...what a concept! LOL! zman

I am very sensitive to drugs so my experience w/neurontin is different but it is successful so I want to share.
I take 2 purple pills at night, don't know the mgs. I do have seizures but they also wanted me on it for depression/mood swings.
I also take Lamital.
The neurontin made me feel really drugged even at a low dose early on. I tried to add a 3rd pill in the AM but I sleepwalked thru the day and could not function.
Over time we settled on 2 neurontin at bedtime and the lamictal during the day.
I liked that the Lamital made me feel energetic and happy but when I asked the pyschiatrist why did I have to take the neurontin he said "to take the edge off, the Lamictal will make you nasty". He actually used the B word LOL.
I'm rattling a little here because alot goes on when trying meds. I've always been told it takes 2 wks for a med to get into your system and then they usually have you increase the dose every 2 wks until you hit the medicinal level for treatment.
I noticed the first night I took the Neurontin that it helped me sleep but that wore of somewhat quickly. Now I take the 2 and along w/other seizure meds (klonopin) and melatonin, I sleep very well most of the time.

Neurontin was made into a blockbuster drug by illegal marketing for unapproved uses.
If you're not taking it for the FDA approved use, you're part of an unsupervised human experiment due to clever pharmaceutical industry marketing.

Nessa Be very careful of this drug. It has been a horrible medication for some people.
Take it slowly. Visit "ask a patient.com" and search Nerontin and see what other people have experienced. It can be good for some - not so for others...

I do not have Lyme but do take Lamictal for bi-polar condition.
I don't know why Dr. would say it makes you 'nasty' (unless I misread your post).
Personally I feel no side-effects from it (maybe because my brain NEEDS it to stable my moods?).
As far as Neurotin, my mother who DOES have Lyme took it to alliviate pain but did not continue due to the way it made her feel.
Was prescribed by pain mgmt. dr. (this was prior to knowing she had Lyme).
But he said it was not like asprin with immediate results.
It needed to build up in system over period of time.

PS - I find a knowledgable pharacist to be my best friend when it comes to understanding medications.
You don't have to necessarily use the one who fills your Rxs. I often call the Walgreens 24-hr. one because he takes the most time with me.
Call more than one until you find a friendly one.
They often know MORE than doctors because it's ALL they deal with.
I also use Wikipedia for drug research which will tell you who makes it...
...as well as the pharmaceutical website for the particular drug.

I took this med and wanted it to work so bad that I ramped up to 3600 mg per day.
I was only on it for about 2 to 3 months then admitted to myself that it wasn't working. I had SEVERE withdrawl issues - nausea, diareah, the works. It took me a couple months to very slowly wean off of it.

I took this when I was seeing a neurologist. He prescribed it for my back pain didn't do a thing for me.
