I have had a stiff neck for 3 years now. However, in the last 4 months since starting abx, it is much worse.

I used to be able to crack it and lately I cannot get any thing. It is on the right side only. Nothing works, massage , chiro and pyshio

I do not want to take muscle relaxants or nsaids.

Is this a Lyme symptom. My LLMD says not usually, yet most people seem to have stiff necks

Could this be Bart.

How can I get some relief? Will it get better.

I am feeling better, not cured yet. My main symptoms are minor headache, neck, right side stomach and fatigue

In 2001 I was diagnosed with 3 strains of Mycoplasma and 3 strains of Chlymedia and the left side of my neck had hurt for years. About 3 months into treatment I woke up one day and nothing hurt. So my reply to you is it is infection related and it will go away!

Let us know when it does.

tony, i'd recommend getting xrays of it in case you have bulges, etc. in L1-5, etc., osteoporosis, etc.

best wishes from a permanent neck sufferer!

i use frozen ice packs on entire time i'm up to numb the pain!

hmmmm...my LLMD asked specifically if I had a stiff neck, I think it is a symptom of Lyme.

You will be ok, these are symptoms of Lyme and co-infections. This is probably a good sign!

It is a sign of lyme. And it can get worse from herxing too. I never had a stiff neck from lyme or the treatment until I started on Mino. Then all of a sudden my neck got so stiff it hurt to lay down or even just sit.

It's one of the most unbearable and annoying symptoms I've ever had from this. I say I could deal with all the just feeling sick, but the stiff neck is awful, something I do not want to have to deal with. [Roll Eyes]

A stiff neck is a hallmark symptom of lyme disease. It is often caused by inflammation. Of course there are many reasons that one can have a stiff neck.

This is from the ILADS site (I would think all LLMD's would be familiar with this):
http://www.ilads.org/guidelines_summary.html

Symptomatic Presentations of Lyme Disease include:

Fatigue
Low grade fevers, ``hot flashes'' or chills
Night sweats
Sore throat
Swollen glands
Stiff neck
Migrating arthralgias, stiffness and frank arthritis
Myalgia
Chest pain and palpitations
Abdominal pain, nausea
Diarrhea
Sleep disturbance
Poor concentration and memory loss
Irritability and mood swings
Depression
Back pain
Blurred vision and eye pain
Jaw pain
Testicular/pelvic pain
Tinnitus
Vertigo
Cranial nerve disturbance ( facial numbness, pain, tingling, palsy or optic neuritis)
Headaches
Lightheadedness
Dizziness "

You may want to ask your doctor to give you some suggestions on what to do for inflammation. There are also lots of natural products that can be used for inflammation. A few things that I know of off the top of my head are:
Serraflazyme
Quercitin
Digestive enzymes - enteric coated on an empty stomach

If you search here at lymenet using the search facility you will find others. I wouldn't use NSAIDS because of the problems they cause with the gut. Just my opinion though.

There is also a book that has a lot of info on diet etc. for inflammation
http://www.lymedoctor.com/aboutDR.html

You may also want to consider that one sided neck pain could be caused by trigger points. There are therapists who specialize in trigger point therapy. There is also a book by Clair Davies called The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook. Tells one how to use a theracane to help with trigger point pain.

Hope you get some relief.

This is my absolute worst symptom so far and I am dealing with a lot of issues.

Mine is right sided also, it is so sore and stiff right now that I can barely move it and it radiates into my collarbone to my ear canal.

Any ideas on how to make this less painful? I have tried pain relievers with no relief at all.

I'm desperate right now.

I have very stiff neck issues and I go weekly for Marcaine Injections or better known as trigger point injections!!! They don't hurt because they numb the skin prior to! They help take the edge off and anestatise the muscles for a little while!!! They are amazing! My neck is one of my worst syptoms it effects my shoulder blade, neck, face, eye and massive headaches!!!

I get a really bad case of bells palsy and severe swelling and these shots definitley help me!! That is why I go weekly!!!

Just a suggestion. The Urgent Care or a pain Dr can do them!

Best of luck! I am sorry you are suffering so badly!!!!

Take care,
Onmyway

I have been going to physical therapy. They do traction on my neck, and I do stretching exercises. It really helps.
Maybe you can get your spouse to do it for ya. Basically you just gently pull on the head for 30 seconds at a time, and release for 10 seconds with about 18lbs of pull.

I also have a permanent sniff neck. I have a home traction unit, plus I go to PT once a week. She does a combination of massage, release, and stretching. I also do stretches at home.

I use to go to the chiro, but my PT can do anything the chiro was doing for me, including adjusting anything out of whack.
