I am considering doing this for my painful shoulder, and maybe these little sores that don't want to go away.

I did it before I was diagnosed. I love it. It may leave marks on you for a bit but it certainly helped me more than once with the feeling of having a cold in my back or the feeling of having a pulled muscle.

I have had cupping done several times. The theory is that through suction it brings more blood circulation to the tissues. As others have said, it creates distinguishable markings that lasts for some time. So don't do it near holiday party backless attire time. As to effecitveness I felt I noticed a difference with it.
Be warned that with effective application technique, it can hurt, at least it did for me. Mine was done with a legitimate chinese doctor. I understand that more "foo~foo" practioners have an adaptated process to provide more soothing process, albeit less functionally effecitvely. At least that is what my chinese doctor tells me.

I prefer the traditional cupping. I have had the new and traditional done and prefer the traditional.
Next time I go to the acupuncturist I think I will ask for some cupping.

it's been awhile.
i don't know what cupping is...except what is explained here

I don't find them too painful. Too me it is sort of a healing like pain if you can even call it pain.
Little children get it done so it is not too painful.

Hi, My cranial-sacral therapist uses cupping on me. She doesn not do it the traditional chinese way with with actual fire. She uses cups that suck out the air. I think my results are the same, and I do notice a difference. There is an immediate release in the muscles of spasm and tension.
As said, it does leave circular bruising, and looks a bit odd in a summer tank top! But, the bruising usually does not hurt me.
I have not had results that made a huge impact on me, but I have muscle spasms that are unrelenting due to cervical spine damage.
