Oh my gosh! I went Wednesday for a colonoscopy. The last ones over the past two years showed pre-cancerous polyps....SOOOOO
This one was fine... but about 10 min after I came to, my heart went into A-fib. They did an EKG and admitted me.
This was 9 a.m. Wed.... At 2:30 they decided to put my heart back into sinus rhythm with a special drug.
They pulled a crash cart into the room and two extra nurses [3 in all] and the cardiologist were there [plus my hubby!].
They called the cardio lab and told the technician to watch my monitor [I had one of those portable things on my chest.]
Before she could finish telling the tech what to do ... BINGO!! My heart went back into rhythm on its own!!!
Praise the Lord! [yes, people were already praying for me through an email prayer chain at church]
They did find that my potassium was slightly low, but they're not sure what really caused the whole scenario.
I did have a spell like this about 3 months ago but it was not documented with an EKG at the time....my heart went back to normal within an hour that time.
anyway....gotta rest.... back later.
HUGS and LOVE to all of you!!!! Posted by blinkie (Member # 14470) on :
Hi Lymetoo-
I'm glad you're ok. I wondre if lyme is still infiltrated in your heart? Maybe you should take a trip to see your LLMD and discuss it as well.
You never can play it too safe with the ticker!
Rest up!

Tutu, so glad you are ok...
My lymie had a bad spell 3 weeks ago. Ended up her potassium was extremely low. Gave her meds for it a few times in the ICU.
She was in respiratory distress and when we got to the hospital, her heart rate was 150. Very scarry stuff...
They could not figure it out but she was also in Diabetic Keto acidosis so think that was the cause. She is to have an echo... but her life has been too busy since for her to take time off.
Once recovered, she is again a bit difficult.
Stay well. hugs. lmt

No, they don't know why it happened. I do blame in part the MVP. I will see the cardiologist for a follow up on Nov. 19th.
They had told me that if the drug to put my heart back right didn't work, they would have to "shock" me the next morning. WHEW!
That means I would have gone all that day and all night with that horrible tremoring of my heart. UGH!
I wanted to say something else, but it got lost in cyberspace a few minutes ago.
I've had a few chest pains too, and had some a little while ago. Guess I'd better go rest again. You know I can't stay away from here with my buddies! Posted by DolphinLady (Member # 6275) on :

Was your aodium also low? Usually they work in tandem.
During a herx last year hubby had a huge spike in B.P. They gave him IV blood pressure meds in the ER which seemed to work. Then he needed IV potassium daily in the hospital for about a week.
I never could decide if it was babs or bart which was messing with his potassium levels.

Hi TuTu,
Thank goodness you came out of this. Must have been really scarey. I know that you probably do a strict ant-yeast diet, but I was just wondering if you are getting enough of the right potassium-magnesium balance.
When I was doing a very strict diet, I had several bouts of scary stuff with my heart.
I started eating more food containing potassium-magnesium and I noticed a big difference in my heart rythym. Not every heart arrythmia is due to Lyme. Just another view cause i am concerned about you.

Thanks....I'm reading every response and I hate to single anyone out ... you're all appreciated very much. I laughed at what you laughed at, that's for sure!
You know... someone mentioned potatoes as a source of potassium [i knew about bananas]... worries me because I don't eat either one.
I do have an occasional sweet potato. I avoid white potatoes because I'm sensitive to nightshades [they cause pain] and I don't eat bananas due to migraines.
I get a headache when I eat bananas...but I LOVE them!
I'll check to see if sweet potatoes contain potassium....what else has it?
Bea... That IV potassium is not fun... painful in an IV drip! They had to put lidocaine in it and it was still not fun!

Lymetoo, I'm so glad you are OK! Did the doc's consider one or more of the meds for sedation could have been a possible/probable culprit? Make sure you get more potassium, usually if your potassium is low, then the sodium is high, as they balance one another, just like Mg and Ca. I've been trying to up my Na as adrenal fatigue sufferers usually more Na, but, now maybe I should stop, I don't wanna push my K too low!
So glad you are well,
Take care! Ocean
Posted by oxygenbabe (Member # 5831) on :
It was probably the prep plus the anesthesia.
The prep is extremely high sodium. That could've lowered your potassium therefore. You can, I believe, ask for a lower sodium prep next time.
The anesthesia they like to use these days is propofol but I don't know how safe it really is.
I prefer versed...and maybe demerol. I've delayed a colonoscopy because of the prep, trying to figure out whether I can do it like last time (I used magnesium citrate) and find a doc who will use versed and demerol. Now 80% of docs in NY use propofol for colonoscopies and what I've read about it scares me.

My surgeon said right away that it was probably the meds. I'm pretty sure I had versed...and likely NOT demerol because it makes me VERY nauseous.
The prep was very high in sodium....I KNOW that for sure too.

Normal A Fib
AF is linked to several cardiac causes, but may occur in otherwise normal hearts. Known associations include:
Hypertension (High blood pressure) Primary heart diseases including coronary artery disease, mitral stenosis (e.g. due to rheumatic heart disease or mitral valve prolapse), mitral regurgitation, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), pericarditis, congenital heart disease, previous heart surgery Lung diseases (such as pneumonia, lung cancer, pulmonary embolism, sarcoidosis) Excessive alcohol consumption ("binge drinking" or "holiday heart syndrome") Hyperthyroidism Carbon monoxide poisoning Dual-chamber pacemakers in the presence of normal atrioventricular conduction.[9] A family history of AF increases risk by 30%.[10] Various genetic mutations may be responsible.[11]
Abstract: Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause profound alterations in the bone marrow. These alterations can mimic the more serious diagnosis of acute leukemia. The two patients described in this report were originally suspected of having acute leukemia or myelodysplasia on the basis of the bone marrow smear, and induction chemotherapy was considered. However, after further studies, they were both found to have vitamin B12 deficiency, and parenteral vitamin B12 administration resulted in normalization of the bone marrow.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of dietary folate, vitamin B(6) (VB(6)) and vitamin B(12) (VB(12)) with the risk of coronary heart disease among middle-aged persons. METHODS: A total of 40,803 subjects aged 40-59 years living in the community who were free of prior diagnoses of cardiovascular disease and cancer and who completed a food frequency questionnaire were followed from 1990-1992 to the end of 2001 in the Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective Study. RESULTS: After 468,472 person-years of follow-up, 251 coronary heart disease incidents were documented. Coronary heart disease and definite myocardial infarction were inversely associated with dietary intake of folate, VB(6) and VB(12) after adjustment for age and sex, but the associations were attenuated after further adjustment for smoking, dietary and other cardiovascular risk factors. However, among non-multivitamin supplement users, multivariable hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) in the highest vs. lowest quintiles of VB(6) intake were 0.60 (0.37-0.97) for total coronary heart disease and 0.52 (0.29-0.91) for definite myocardial infarction, and the inverse associations with VB(12) were marginally significant. The combination of below-median intake of three vitamins or of only B(6) conferred a twice excess risk of total coronary heart disease. CONCLUSIONS: Dietary intake of VB(6) was associated with a reduced risk of coronary heart disease among middle-aged non-multivitamin supplement users. Dietary folate and VB(12) were also suggested to be protective factors for coronary heart disease.
Dont forget potassium and MG

What exactly was your prep? Do you remember? There is colyte, and there is also a sodium phosphate prep that people prefer as they don't have to drink all that gunk, but it is known to damage the kidneys in a small percentage of the population. Some folks have even had to go on dialysis as a result and sometimes the damage can be somewhat delayed. Personally--after I read this I was disgusted that the medical profession would use something elective that could, even in a small percentage of patients, permanently damage their health.
Please monitor your kidneys closely for the next six months too. It seems to me the prep has set this off, upset your kidneys, electrolytes and thus your heart.
"Administration of other sodium phosphate-containing products, such as enemas or non-prescription liquid purgatives, has resulted in fatalities due to significant fluid shifts, severe electrolyte abnormalities, and cardiac arrhythmias. These have been observed in patients with renal insufficiency or bowel perforation, and with misuse or overdose of these products."
"Adverse Reactions
In clinical trials, the most commonly observed adverse reactions (incidence ≥ 1%, all treated patients) occurring with the use of Visicol Tablets are related to the desired purgative effect. Nausea, vomiting, abdominal bloating, abdominal pain, dizziness, and headache occur, and are generally transient and self-limited, requiring no specific treatment. All of these adverse events also occurred in patients who took the PEG-salt solution comparator. Small superficial mucosal ulcerations, typical of those previously reported from the use of liquid preparations of sodium phosphate, and instances of mucosal bleeding have been observed on colonoscopy.
One patient, with no history of heart disease, developed an initial episode of atrial fibrillation after severe vomiting immediately after taking Visicol Tablets. Another patient, with known arteriosclerotic heart disease, who took the PEG-salt solution comparator developed atrial fibrillation and also vomited. No patient in the clinical studies developed predefined postural changes in vital signs with concomitant symptoms of lightheadedness or syncope."
So it isn't out of the question that your prep led to atrial fib, and somehow it hasn't corrected itself yet.

Wow, Tutu I'm glad you are feeling better. But gee whiz, when are we going to get a break. It seems like it goes from attacking one part of the body to another.
I too am having suspicious attacks in my chest. I finally went to my doc last week after about 4 weeks of these first time feeling in chest.
I had an EKG and am having a stress test next week. I've always felt blessed that at least the lyme wasn't attacking my heart (as it's known to do).
Doc asked me why I had waited a month before coming in. Like I told him, if I came into see him everytime some weird symptom came on....I'd be there every week.
Coming and going, waxing and waning has been life for 8yrs. Maybe you PCP can order the stress test before you see the specialist.
Take care, Pam

Posted by oxygenbabe (Member # 5831) on :
Tutu, I'd bet my money this is not your lyme.
This is a reaction to the sodium phosphate prep which in my opinion should be fricken outlawed. It causes kidney damage, atrial fib in people with no prior risk.
Next time you must get a low sodium prep.
Meanwhile, monitor your kidney function and try to go easy on your body. After I wrecked myself with 4 days of high dose salt/c, I spent the next 9 months on a very bland diet. No extra salt. I did have cravings for avocadoes and milk (potassium and calcium). I would recommend a very bland diet, and kidney support. I think the heart issue is coming from electrolyte imbalances that are related to the kidneys. Flush the kidneys with water, don't stress them with excess minerals, and look into some kidney support.
Maybe even homeopathic cell salts would be helpful. I know after my salt/c debacle I had this urgent feeling I should take nat. mur tissue cell salt. I didn't even realize it was homeopathic salt!
Posted by Lymetoo (Member # 743) on :
Cell salts are not "salts"???
hiker.... NOT going won't happen since my dad had colon cancer at age 39 and I've had two pre-cancerous polyps.
I won't have to have another for at least 2 yrs now since this one was OK. I will carefully choose the right prep this time. New dr and new prep this time....not good.
map...I had a stress test this Saturday after going in the hospital with chest pains Friday. It was all OK.
Thanks all....

They're homeopathic. You could just get a bottle (cheap) at Vitamin Shoppe--of all twelve salts. Hyland's makes them.
Let your gastro know that you believe it was the prep, and he should preferentially prescribe colyte, or a low sodium prep, unless he has a patient that refuses them.
This prep should be a last resort. It is somewhat dangerous.

Hey Lymetoo,
Sorry this happened to you and glad you got through it OK, in the end.
Based on my experience, studying and knowledge gained due to my cardiac problems I'm making an educated guess the the low potassium caused the a-fib, as low potassium is a common cause of heart beat irregularities.
Another educated guess is the pre-colonoscopy flush out combined with no food intake for probably 12+ hours caused the low potassium.
In order to keep up you potassium levels, especially if certain potassium rich foods bother you, I suggest you simply use OTC potassium supplements ... relatively inexpensive.
Oh, BTW, your doctor should monitor your potassium level during routine check-up's and lab work.
Be well, my friend,

Makes me embarrassed to be a part of the medical profession, to hear of an elective DANGEROUS medical situation such as this. Especially since there are alternative preps!!!! We're all here for you, out in internet support land . . . Julie

Get a few b12 shots! Also the low Potassium caused by the flush at hospital. Take that to tutu and magnesium.

This just occurred to me..... You should have the Dr Rx tests for your electrolytes to see exactly how much you should be supplementing.
Hope you're feeling better today! Posted by sunshinyday (Member # 14337) on :
So sorry that you had that situation!
Very glad that you are better.
Also keep in mind that a magnesium defiency can also cause irregular Heartbeats. Maybe you can add some foods high in magnesium too.
