This can be caused by acid reflux. I was getting acid up in my throat while I was sleeping that was causing swelling/inflammation and produced a "lump in the throat" that constantly felt like I needed to clear my throat or swallow to get rid of. I fixed it by not eating any food within 3 hours of bedtime and elevating the head of my bed to keep acid from rising up my esophagus while sleeping.
It was really sneaky because I felt no heartburn during the day, but I would awake with a scratchy/burning sensation in the back of my throat, which was my first clue. Then I learned that the "unswallowable lump in the throat" feeling was a commmon acid reflux symptom.

Hi Shelly, I have this problem too, it was better for a few weeks and today, my throat feels kind of closed up, but I just ate a big salad with no prob, I think it's just my swollen glands today making it feel that way.
However, I have gone months with the swallowing problem, I had a real problem with weight loss in 2004 because of it, still need to gain, but not nearly as bad as I was then. I know it's bad, but I used to drink 100% fruit juice during the day for calories, because I literally could not swallow much food. It would take me 15 mins to eat one cracker and I had a 2 year old and a 2 month old, I couldn't sit at the table for 4 hours to eat a normal meal.
I would also eat ice cream, of course this is before I knew I had Lyme and that it feeds the bugs.
Just take your time swallowing, put some water in your mouth to help swallow if needed.
Take care, I know how awful this symptom is and then couple it with low blood sugar.... argh!!!
Take care, Ocean

This symptom comes and goes with me... and it just started back after upping my dose of Doxy. Not sure what it is..I don't think it involves acid reflux or anything like that, it just feels like my throat is "thickened" and maybe my tonsils are bigger. I also feel like I always have mucus in the back of my throat.

I have this too. It comes and goes. I find that drinking ice cold water helps me.
The infection is stiing in the small intestine and I think there is just swelling from the inflammation that extends up into the throat.
I chew everytning really well and swallow a little at a time.

I have experienced this too, still do at times. One of my first symptoms. It is neurological. The swallowing test I had done (forget the name) showed that my esophagus just does not work correctly, it looked "lazy".
It did get better with abx tx. So hang in there. I found certain foods made it worse (bagels are a no no). Small bites and taking your time eating.
Take care.

Hi there Shelly,
This was one of my first unusual symptoms when I started treatment.
The 'newbies' link posted by Treepatrol has a topic from Tincup called 'Cranial Nerves' and has your answer.
Check it out.
What you're probably experiencing is cranial nerve damage.
I had 2 or 3 cranial nerves damaged, the worst being 6th nerve palsy of the right eye.
Had the swallowing problem too. With continued treatment it improved.
Hope this helps.

Hi there
I get that at different levels. Right now it's good but a few years ago I had it so bad that when I swallowed it would just be air going down my throat like the muscles were barely working.
It was very scary so I know how ya feel. Anyhow yes I still get it but never as bad as the muscle thing anymore.
