I got a sore throat the 31st and today finally ignored everyone telling me it was a virus or drainage and went to local PCP where it was confirmed I have Strep.

The doctor put me on Amoxicillin 850mg 2x a day. Except, I've been on Amoxicillin 500mg 3x a day before I got ill and the duration of my illness so far!

Should I be on something else for my Strep? And why did I get it when I'm already on a medicine considered one of the staples in fighting it? I don't know much about drug resistant bacteria but what are the risks here? Is this a bad sign?

I got strep throat a couple of months before starting Lyme treatment. I took Doxy for it and it still turned into systemic strep. You should definetly keep an eye on this. Have your doctor test you later, in a month or so to make sure it does not turn systemic. There is a specific test for this.

You obviously came into contact with strep and your body just couldn't fight it off along with LD. It sounds like you need to change antibiotics.

Great. What exactly is systemic strep? How do you know you have it?

And my doctor told me Doxy isn't really that good for Strep? [confused]

Didn't mean to scare you! I got it before I started treatment for Lyme. The same drugs that work on lyme would work on strep.

Not sure that amoxy is commonly used for Lyme though except in young children.

Systemic is when it spreads through out your body. You wouldn't likely know you had it because the symptoms are very similar to LD. The test are accurate for testing for it however. Still if you treat for Lyme you aren't likely to get it.

Did your doctor actually do a throat culture to see what pathogens were causing your sore throat?

If it is Strep A (cause of "strep throat")then Amoxil should have taken care of it.

Also, along with the culture results the lab will send sensitivity results telling your doctor which antibiotic will be most effective against the strain of bacteria present.

If your doctor just looked at your throat, saw that it was red, and said "you have strep" then he did not do a very thorough job.

If you got it while on Amoxy, I would think it would need another drug. I'd put a call into your LLMD and let him tell you which one so it doesn't interfere with your Lyme treatment.

Your dosage of Amoxy is rather low for Lyme. I was taking 2500 mg three times daily. I had to ramp up to that dosage.

I hope you feel better soon.

Can you tell me a reference source where it says the symptoms are the same as Lyme? I think this is why Clindamycin may have helped me. It was treating strep!!

Yes, he did two throat cultures. One was the fast one they do in the office. It's the first time I've ever had one of those come back postivie!

The 2nd he's sent off to check against which antibiotic will work but I won't have that result until Friday.

So, with all that in mind, I've been on Amoxi for months slowly going up in dose to test my tolerance limits and I still have strep. Argh. Pain!
