HEY GUYS--

ANYONE ELSE OUT THERE WITH NORMAL SERUM MAGNESIUM LEVELS BUT LOW RBC LEVELS OF MAGNESIUM?

If so, what's your treatment protocol? I didn't see much info about this in the archives. I'm currently treating for this and wondered if someone else on this board has already gone down this path.

Thanks!!

A

My daughter is on Procrit and Iron Infusions for very low RBC's ever since she contracted Babesia. Not sure if this is the same type of low RBC's your referring to...

My pain doctor told me to have my family doctor check me for RBC (Red Blood Cell magnesium). From reading about it, most doctors only do the regular magnesium levels test. So I'm going to do it. I haven't found much about how it is treated.

Thanks for the responses...Just to clarify, I have very low levels of magnesium as reflected in the RBC mag test through Quest. I don't have low RBC count....

A series of Bi monthly IV Magnesium Sulfate or Chloride and weekly IM injections of mag sulfate.

I continue to have to do the IM injections (4 years now), but can go 10 days to 2 weeks without symptoms of low mag popping up. My RBC Mag levels now read low normal finally.

IMHO, no amount of orals can get you back to where you need to be.

i take oral mag malate
and use topical magnesium cream/ointment from key pharmacy just outside of seattle.
you need to get your doc to get you a script for the cream.

Wow..thanks guys for all of the great responses...

Lymeinhell, I completely agree with your statement about the IVs...I kept thinking I could replenish my low levels of mag with orals but it just wasn't working...

I've started going the IVs and even did a number of IM injections (been at this for almost 2 months) and my RBC levels are still low...I've had my kidneys checked so I know I'm not renally wasting it....I cannot believe how long it takes to replenish the levels....I know of another patient with low mag levels that took 6 months to get hers to normal...

By the way, when you started your IVs, did you get toothache-like or stabbing pains in your legs? I've talked to others with very low RBC levels of mag and they had similar experience with the IVs....we all think it's either from calcium salts which get deposited from very low levels of mag OR from nerve regeneration....

Lymeinhell--Do you know how long it took you before you noticed FEELING REALLY BETTER (ie no more cramping/fatigue)?

Thanks so much

Bugg, sorry I lost track of this thread. Not on the board every day.

I can't recall getting stabbing tooth pains with the IV. Have had them on occasion when I was sick and I applied Clove Oil to the tooth thinking infection, and the pain would go away never to reappear.

Stabbing leg pains - did have them when I was dehydrated from having the runs for months, and they would typically go away when I took enough Potassium with Magnesium (maleate).

I ALWAYS noticed immediate results from Mag IV's. Once when I skipped my IM shots for 3 weeks, I woke up with a pulse of 124... and BP through the roof, and muscle knots on my skull. Impromptu trip to the LLMD for IV. Within 30 minutes, my BP went from 150/95 to 110/70 and pulse back to 80. And no more knots on my skull.

So for me, I don't think the evidence could be any clearer. Effects were always immediate. Lasting results, however, took a few bi-weekly IV's supplemented by the weekly IM shots to get continuous relief from my remaining symptoms.

Mind you, I've been off abx for a little more than 4 yrs now, about the same amount of time I've been doing the IM. I can push the shots to every 2 weeks, but longer than that, I typically end up with muscle knots.

I never atributed fatigue to low mag, but that was gone long before I went off abx. The 'spells' of fatigue went away with some serious yeast treatment - severe candida will throw off you blood sugar, and mine was all over the board. It's something you should keep track of, even if it means buying one of those home kits. Hope this helps!
