I don't know what that means for US strains but in "Cure Unknown" it is mentioned that the US strain and European strain are genetically the same.
Aside from that, I've read it may be a heat shock protein too.
You may be able to find out more by digging around in pubmed or google.

You can get different results at different times because the outer surface proteins change so that borrelia can evade the immune system.
Also, I've read that even temperature can change results.
Lyme is a clinical diagnosis. There are no accurate tests. Perhaps an antibiotic challange would help? You can look on IgeneX website or call them to get the details.
The best way to find out if you have lyme is through an ILADS lyme doctor. They will know how to do an appropriate physical exam and history along with interpretation of tests and possibly results of an antibiotic challenge.
Go to the bottom of the page here and click to find a doctor. www.ilads.org

I don't think it is so much something called "heat shock protein" but that is the way they do many of the tests.
If a particular protein can be identified that links to a certain microbe.
It's more complex but my understanding of it stops there. Sorry.

PoohBear,
are you seeing a LLMD? If so, they should be able to explain this.

TESTING
You should also be evaluated for coinfections. Not all tests are great in that regard, either, but a good LLMD can evaluate you and then guide you in testing. One of the top labs is:
