when you stopped eating gluten, how long before your symptoms stopped? what is the range in time for you to get better? Jenin

I did an elimination diet in 2007, before my lyme Dx, when I just had a fibromyalgia Dx.
I started feeling better 10 days after eliminating gluten, sugar, corn syrup and other foods.
I think it varies from person to person.

My doc says 6-8 weeks, some up to 6 months to clear the toxins. I don't really believe in it a lot, but I've been gluten/dairy-free for 5+ months. All it's done is lighten my wallet (most treatments do). Posted by jkmom (Member # 14004) on :
I could tell by the second day but my symptoms were anxiety, irritability, and fatigue instead of GI issues.

Please read my posts about AI and this whole subject. Avoidance doesn't work because the frequency of wheat is in so many products. You would have to starve yourself to death. It is in dairy because the cows eat grain. You can figure the rest out yourself. It is in every toothpaste. It is in sunflower oil. One molecule of wheat is enough to cause problems if you are "allergic" to it. The wheat problems cause the leaky gut, the leaky gut causes toxins to leak into the system and enter cross our already damaged blood brain barrier bringing on neuro symptoms. The leaky gut also causes anemia, etc. etc.
Be sure you take this wheat gluten problem, often inherited and passed to children, seriously. It is very involved in MS and Parkinsonism for some people.
Take care.

I am very familiar with GF Casien free diet, my son has mercury poison (otherwise known as Autistic spectrum disorder), and he has been on the gfcf diet for 5 years. I already have recipies, flours, etc....so I all need to do is eat the foods he eats. I am also going to stop diary. The pain I had in my stomach after eating bulgar wheat was so intense, then by the second day, it got better. I don't eat also of wheat anyways, but I noticed that when I do, which is 1-3 times a week, I get the stomach problems.

I felt better the next day as far as GI symptoms are concerned. Don't remember how long before my energy improved. Maybe a few days. The improvement was dramatic for me.
Yes, it is in a lot of products, just like corn. But it can be avoided. I cook from scratch and hardly buy any processed products.
Best, Karen

GiGi, I wish the AI treatment wasn't so costly. It's a bundle when converted to US $$$. It sounds like a good thing IF it's useful and can be proven.

GiGi,
AI?

- GiGi has a good point when she says the "Avoidance doesn't work because the frequency of wheat is in so many products. "
But, I NEVER eat ANY foods with even a trace of wheat. If it is not packaged, prepared . . . there is no trace of gluten. True, package and prepared foods cannot be trusted but I just don't use any of those.
That makes it much easier. -

I have a daughter with Celiac, and she is my next disease project. There seems to be so many in my family lately.

Dan, I'd look over at celiac.com for info about celiac. My understanding is that even though gluten intolerance can go away (mine did) celiac disease cannot once it's triggered.
I was gluten free for two years during treatment. Like Keebler, I ate mostly natural foods that are naturally gluten free .... I didn't buy much of the processed stuff. Fruits, veggies, meat, rice, eggs, etc. are all naturally gluten-free.
A lot of hair products, lotions, etc. have gluten, but a lot don't

When I stopped gluten about four years ago I felt better within 48 hours.

- SGK brings up an excellent point I had forgotten: shampoos, etc. with wheat protein. For some, that can make a difference.
Also, I get some of my kitchen herbs and spices in bulk. It's best not to do that to prevent cross contamination.

My understanding is the same, that it is irreversible.
I have heard that before, concerning other conditions, that have been reversed. What that means to me is that it is not generally known to be reversible.
She is bad. One speck of Gluton will make her very sick. Since she probably inherited this from me, Mr. Autoimmune, I would like to help her resolve it, if possible.
I am looking for a miracle, I suppose, but I have had some miracles before, so maybe...
Thank you.

Going 100% gluten free has helped me SOOOO much.
When I was first diagnosed with gluten intolerance, I tried going gluten free, but didn't go 100% as I didn't change cooking ware and I was getting cross contamination without even really knowing it. I was not feeling any better.
But then I was told you had to go 100% and actually change your kitchenware and be very vigilant about cross contamination. Ever since doing that, I have felt a LOT better. A world of a difference. And I noticed pretty quickly... I'd say a few days probably.

Took about 10 days for me to feel like a new person!
GIGI.. there is no gluten in my toothpaste!!
I'm very careful and do not eat processed foods either unless it says gluten free.
www.celiac.com has a great list for things to avoid and things that are OK... and a good discussion board. That is where I met sixgoofy!!

This recent Dr. Mercola article may help some with understanding of how our gut may be affected by many products besides the obvious gluten contain products.
I have been on a gluten-free diet for many years as I have always felt better off gluten foods, even before knowing I had an allergie. But being off gluten did not heal my gut nor my allergie...I just avoided it to get through each day to feel good.
Now I do not have to avoid it. The AI therapy helped me with all my allergies. For me I found it was not only the obvious gluten problem, but other non-obvious allergies at the root of my gut issues. Clearing toxins and avoiding re-adding them is now my focus.
Besides gluten intolerance or allergies...most with chronic disease have allergies to corn, soy, and wheat. Never thought I was eating corn or soy products daily...but I just learn they are in most everything I have consumed over my lifetime along with health products, in supplements, in vaccines, in preservatives. Fat free...gluten free processed products contain them! Corn is a bigger culpret than we know!
Lymetoo...you may be suprised to find what exactly is in your toothpaste and other basic products you use!!! Hard to know if what the label reads is from pure, unadulterated , and not genetically modified product sources. I was surprised to find out! This is worth your time and research.
If you have gluten allergie...your most likely have a deeper allergies to corn, soy and wheat. I suggest to focus on them all...not just one aspect of leaky gut.
diet. Good luck to you!

My daughter also has GI issues- my mom FMS/CFS/IBS , nephew with autism spectrum sister colitis- me with all my autoimmune/lyme type problems... read about the GAPS theory (Gut and psychology syndrome) and read about SCD diet used to treat autism, crohs (amazon "breaking the vicious cycle"0originally developed for celiac). Theory with GAPS is you get your first flora through birth canal with Mom. If Mom is bad that is passed to you and thus the cycle continues.
I wonder if all our issues could be gut related- I wonder if anyone diagnosed with Lyme has tried the SCD diet and gotten better?
