Hi ! I am treating bart and cpn at the moment with azithromycin in combination with rifampin
2 Questions: Is it better to take rifampin 600 in one dose or divided in 2x300 ?(very short half life of rifampin)
Is it best to take azithromycin daily or every second day? What is commonly recommended?
Thanks in advance

Our LLMD has my daughter on Rifampin 300 mg 2x daily and azithromycin 5 teaspoons 1x daily. My daughter is 15 so I don't know if thats why he has the Rif taken 2X instead of one shot. the zith is liquid because she has a hard time swallowing pills. I have heard of people taking Rif 1X daily.

I was taking rifampin 600mg once a day. I was also taking zith 300mg away from the rifampin, once a day. At the same time I was on doxy.
My doctor now has me pulsing M, W, F - mycobutin(like rifampin), zith, and omnicef. I take the mybobutin and the zith two times a day.
I think it is all what your doctor tells you to do. I don't think there is one right way to take it.
With that said, bart or lyme is still kicking my butt - 5 months into treatment.
Best of luck. Kathy

I was taking the Rifampin 300mg twice daily when I was taking it, but it didn't seem to do anything.
I was kind of worried it was being excreted from my body too quickly, and that was why I didn't notice much.
I wonder if 600mg once daily would have made a difference?

some say 600 once a day is the only way but my llmd said 300 twice a day
he also said diflucan and zith can be taken with it anytiome
but sometimes even good docs are not really up on the interactions

Be very careful with Rifampin!!! My daughter had a severe allergic reaction to Rifampin while she was in the hospital last week and almost died. . .nausea, vomiting, itch and rash, trouble breathing and drop in blood pressure to 40/33. She first took Rifampin two years ago for Bart and was sick with the first dose so discontinued right away. ID doc at hospital didn't believe us when we told him she had had a reaction previously. It is the 2nd or 3rd dose that can kill!! Please be careful.

hi susan ! It is a higher risk when you restart rifampin to become severe allergic or lifethreatening reactions. I can handle the rifampin quite well.but thanks for your advice.
