You get the money amount from the first date you put your application in.
My first payment was 7 months worth. I was approved the first time, I didn't have long to wait compared to others.

For SSDI the start date is 5 months after your disability date.
For SSI the start date is the date your application went in.

medicare goes into effect 2 years from the date you APPLIED for SSDI and APPROVED!
i was paid 3 yrs. back pay LUMP SUM within 1 month.
each state/case is different. i know of folks who have waited over 7 MONTHS to get theirs.
they post on disinissues.
maddog, what step are you on?
rejected once; rejected on recondieration; or have you had admin law judge hearing??
filing to ALJ hearing normally takes 2.5 YEARS! it's slower than molasses.
maddog, is your question that you need to know for "dire emergency" ... YOU ARE LOSING YOUR HOME, ETC. *********************************
they will move it up, etc. and USING YOUR FEDERAL SENATORS/HOUSE REP helps on that too!!

Hi,I am only in the first try phase.
I read two books on how to get SS and used them.
I already had my senator and congressman wright a letter.
I have been to a SS Head Shrinker and am to see a regular SS Doctor for a psysical on the 16th .
Just my interstitial cystitis is enuf to get SS, I have the interstitial cystitis foundation on my side. And a wonderful urologist backing me 100 percent.
I have more than 10 disabilities with other smaller problems .Even small airways disease from the asbestos at work.
NOT TO MENTION Cronic Relapsing Lyme disease.
I would love to get paid all the way back to the application date. BUT!
"What happens when my claim is approved? When do my benefits start? If your application is approved, your first Social Security disability benefits will be paid for the sixth full month after the date your disability began.
Here is an example: If the state agency decides your disability began on January 15, your first disability benefit will be paid for the month of July. Social Security benefits are paid in the month following the month for which they are due, so you will receive your July benefit in August."
What this is saying is that Social Security decides the date you became disabled, then requires you to serve a 5-month waiting period without any Social Security benefits starting with the date of disability.
So if you became disabled 30 months ago according to Social Security, you will get a retroactive check covering the last 25 months.
Social Security is a federal program, so it does not vary by state. The Social Security Act is a federal law (applies to the entire U.S.) and the regulations that implement the Act are federal regulations. (Social Security uses state agencies to make the disability determination for them. That's all.) So the 5-month waiting period applies to the entire country.
SSI (Supplemental Secuirty Income)is welfare for those over age 65 and the disabled who have very low income and very few resources (savings, etc.). If you qualify for Social Security and have a very low benefit amount, you MAY also qualify for some SSI benefits. States contribute to the amount of the SSI payment, so the benefit amount can vary by state.

Social Security is federal funded, but the states are the ones that control their claims, processing, etc.
