My LLMD recently found out I'm anemic and had me start taking iron supplements.

Ever since taking the supplements I have been horribly nauseous and had diarrhea (gross.. I know)

My LLMD says he's never heard of this and that usually people get constipated .. not diarrhea.

Has anyone else had this happen to them with iron supplements?

Laura, I've heard of it giving some people stomach aches and making them nauseated... I take iron supplements due to very low ferritin levels but thankfully it does not give me any of those side effects.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I have the same symptoms as you Laura : ( I'm supposed to take it three times a day, but I can only take it twice at most. It's been a couple months and I don't get nauseous as much anymore as long as I eat something with it. But the other problem continues...

Laura, I take iron sometimes. You may have to experiment with brands/types to find a comfort zone.

What does your doctor think caused the anemia?

Yes, most iron makes people constipated. Are you still taking lots of probiotics?

Feel better!!!

he doesn't know what caused the anemia. he had me do stool samples to rule out any type of internal bleeding but the results are back yet.

His son had lyme and he said he presented with anemia as well - so it might just have something to do with this stupid disease.

I'm not taking probiotics yet - I haven't started Lyme treatment. I will be starting on April 8.

However I'm starting to think it wasn't the iron supplements because I stopped them and am still very sick. There is a GI bug going around and it may be the culprit - it just happened to hit me when I started the iron.

If it's not one thing it's another!

Laura,

Try chelated iron. It might help with the GI issues. Iknow Twinlab makes one.

One thing my LLD stresses over and over is to take the iron supplements six hours away from abx.

There are some natural, herbal products out there that might help increase your iron and not cause side effects. Sorry I don't know the names, but they are at every health food store.

For me, eating beef for a few days always raises my iron quickly.
